Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.—Sophomore Tina Balzotti (Duxbury, Mass.) scored her third goal of the game with 1:59 remaining in the second overtime as Connecticut College opened the season with a 13-12 victory over visiting Babson College in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Silfen Field.
Senior Taylor Thomas (Needham, Mass.) led all players with five goals and one assist, while first-year Annie Cornbrooks (Wilton, Conn.) added three goals for the Camels. Classmate Madison Barker (Boston, Mass.) finished with a game-high 10 draw controls, and junior Maggie Hogan (Arnold, Md.) collected a team-high three groundballs in the win.
Senior Rachel Secrist (Westford, Mass.) scored four goals and had three assists for seven points to go along with four groundballs to lead the Beavers. Junior Kayla Farina (Newton, Mass.) and sophomores Christine Gill (Hingham, Mass.) and Kiley Fischer (Marblehead, Mass.) all scored twice. First-year Julia Harrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) finished with a team-high four draw controls.
Connecticut College scored nine seconds into the contest, but goals from Secrist, Fischer and Farina gave the Green and White a 3-1 edge just 5:06 into the game. Farina followed Thomas' first tally of the game to keep Babson in front 4-2 before the Camels ripped off six consecutive markers, including two apiece from both Thomas and Balzotti to take an 8-4 lead with 7:34 to go in the opening stanza.
Fischer netted her second goal of the game with 3:46 left in the opening half, but Thomas countered with her fourth tally of the day just 32 seconds to help Connecticut College take a 9-5 lead into the break.
Secrist scored a pair of goals in the opening six minutes of the second half to help Babson cut its deficit in half, but Cornbrooks and Thomas each scored around a marker from Beavers' first-year Charlotte O'Halloran (Middletown, R.I.) to stay in front 11-8 with 16:53 left in the game.
The Green and White rallied though, as Gill, Farina and Secrist all scored in a span of just over four minutes to tie the game at 11-11 with 8:12 left in regulation. Neither team scored late in the second half and the teams traded goals late in the first overtime period before Balzotti notched the game-winning goal against Babson for the second consecutive year in the second OT.
Sophomore Stevie Burger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) finished with six saves in her first career start for the Beavers, while first-year Meg Raskin (Westwood, Mass.) made nine stops for the Camels.
Connecticut College finished with a 17-11 edge in draw controls and was 4-of-7 on free-position shots.
The Green and White, which forced nine turnovers and went 8-for-9 on clear opportunities, went 2-of-4 on free-position attempts.
Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts nationally-ranked Amherst in its home opener at 6:15 p.m., while Connecticut College travels to Springfield on Thursday for a 6 p.m. start.
