Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Matt McMorrow (Pearl River, N.Y.) scored twice and No. 4 USCHO.com/No. 7 D3hockey.com Babson College got points from 11 different players on its way to defeating visiting Saint Michael's College, 5-1, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Friday night at the Babson Skating Center.
Babson, which was playing its first home game since October 31, is now 8-1-1 overall and 5-0-0 in conference play, while Saint Michael's drops to 2-8-0 overall and 1-6-0 in the NEHC.
Junior Michael Phillips (Richmond Heights, Ohio) and sophomore Rob Devaney (Reading, Mass.) both finished with a goal and an assist for the Beavers. Junior Tim Searles (Chesapeake, Va.) scored once, while sophomore Jake Donahue (Groveland, Mass.) led all players with two assists. Juniors Dan Casey (Chatham, N.J.) and Bill Seligman (Toronto, Ontario), sophomores Josh Casper (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Paul Wagner (Walpole, Mass.), and first-years Matt Brazel (Hingham, Mass.) and Tommy Munichiello (Weymouth, Mass.) all recorded one assist apiece.
Senior goaltender Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) came within 16 seconds of another shutout before the Purple Knights got on the board with a late power play goal. He finished the night with 25 saves for Babson.
Devaney gave the Green and White a 1-0 lead just 2:28 into the game with his fourth goal of the season. Murray made 10 first-period saves and the Beavers narrowly missed on a pair of opportunities to extend their lead as Casey and Donahue both hit the right post in the final seven minutes of the stanza.
Babson killed off a penalty late in the first period and two more in the second before striking for a pair of power play tallies in the final five minutes of the frame. The Beavers took advantage of a 5-on-3 advantage as Phillips notched his second goal of the year at the 15:52 mark to make it 2-0, and McMorrow followed with his first goal of the year just 1:19 later to put the hosts in front 3-0 at 17:11.
Searles tallied his third goal of the year at 3:49 of the third period and McMorrow finished off the first two-goal game of his career to give the Green and White a 5-0 lead with 2:33 remaining in the game. Babson killed off 59 seconds of a Saint Michael's 5-on-3 power play inside the final 90 seconds of the contest, but sophomore Eric Salzillo (Johnston, R.I.) ripped a shot just under the crossbar at the 19:44 mark for the final margin.
First-year goaltender Chris Johnson (Duxbury, Mass.) stopped 31 shots on the evening for the Purple Knights.
The Beavers went 2-for-4 on the power play, held a 36-26 edge in shots and also hit four posts on the night.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as Babson hosts Norwich, while Saint Michael's visits UMass-Boston.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are now 20-2-1 all-time against St. Michael's and are unbeaten over their last 17 games (16-0-1) against the Purple Knights going back to 2004.
• With three points on Friday night, Phillips and Seligman have now combined for six goals and 10 assists over the last five games against Saint Michael's.
• Donahue, who leads all Babson defensemen in scoring, has produced one goal and four assists over the team's last three games.
• The Beavers are now 30-2-3 at the Babson Skating Center going back to February 2013.
