Three-Goal First Period Sends No. 5/6 Men's Ice Hockey Past UNE, 5-1

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine—Junior Bill Seligman (Toronto, Ontario) recorded a goal and an assist as part of a three-goal first period, lifting No. 5 D3hockey.com/No. 6 USCHO.com Babson College over the University of New England, 5-1, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Forum.

With the win, Babson remains unbeaten at 6-0-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the conference, while the University of New England drops to 1-4-1 overall and 1-4-0 in NEHC play.

Junior Dan Casey (Chatham, N.J.), sophomores Charlie Ackerman (Bradenton, Fla.) and Bobby Hall (Westwood, Mass.), and first-year Matt Brazel (Hingham, Mass.) each scored once for the Beavers. Sophomore Josh Casper (Lake Forest, Ill.) contributed a career-high two assists, while senior Jimmy Magrath (Medfield, Mass.), junior Tim Searles (Chesapeake, Va.) and sophomores Rob Devaney (Reading, Mass.) and Ryan Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) all chipped in with one assist apiece.

Following an eight-goal performance at Southern Maine on Friday night, the Green and White scored three times in the span of 6:17 to take control against the Nor'easters. Following a turnover, Seligman broke in on University of New England first-year goaltender Joe Noonan (Cranston, R.I.) and beat him with a wrist shot for a 1-0 lead at the 8:33 mark.

Casey notched his fifth goal in the last four games, knocking home a rebound to make it 2-0 at 12:35, and Brazel, who was making his collegiate debut, beat Noonan with a wrist shot for his first career tally for a 3-0 lead at 14:50 of the first period. Seligman nearly made it a four-goal game late in the stanza, but had his clang off the post and out of danger.

Ackerman scored the only goal of the second period just 59 seconds in when he buried the rebound of a Devaney shot to push Babson's advantage to 4-0. The Nor'easters finally got on the board at 7:19 of the third period when junior Trevor Fleurent (Biddeford, Maine) scored on the power play, snapping the Beavers' 254:32 scoreless streak going back to October 31. The Green and White capped the scoring at 19:49 as Hall notched his first goal of the year.

Senior goaltender Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) was once again superb in between the pipes for Babson, as he finished with 30 saves. Noonan stopped nine shots in the first period before giving way to first-year Connor Maloney (Woburn, Mass.), who turned away 22 shots over the final 40 minutes for the University of New England.

Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to UMass-Dartmouth at 7 p.m., while the Nor'easters will travel to Daniel Webster on Saturday at 1 p.m.
