Box Score GORHAM, Maine—Junior Dan Casey (Chatham, N.J.) finished with two goals and one assist, while senior goaltender Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) posted his third straight shutout and set a school record by extending his scoreless minutes streak to 207:14 as No. 5 D3hockey.com/No. 6 USCHO.com Babson College blanked the University of Southern Maine, 8-0, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Friday night at the USM Ice Arena.
Babson, which recorded its third consecutive shutout, is 5-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in league play, while Southern Maine drops to 3-3-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the NEHC.
Murray finished with 18 saves to post the 15th shutout of his career as the Beavers blanked the Huskies for the fifth time in as many meetings between the teams. The Green and White has not allowed a goal in 10 straight periods going back to its October 31 victory over Curry.
Junior Tim Searles (Chesapeake, Va.) scored once and had two assists, classmate Michael Phillips (Richmond Heights, Ohio) added a goal and an assist and fellow junior Bill Seligman (Toronto, Ontario) recorded a career-high three assists for Babson. Senior Max Franklin (Wrentham, Mass.) also contributed a goal and an assist, while classmate Jimmy Magrath (Medfield, Mass.) and sophomores Charlie Ackerman (Bradenton, Fla.) and Jake Donahue (Groveland, Mass.) all scored once in the win.
Senior Mike Vollmin (Wilmington, N.C.) recorded one assist, while the sophomore trio of Rob Devaney (Reading, Mass.), Ryan Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Matt McMorrow (Pearl River, N.Y.) all finished with one assist apiece. The Beavers had 12 different players record at least one point in the victory.
Donahue and Ackerman scored just 4:29 apart late in the first period to stake the Green and White to a 2-0 lead at the first intermission. Casey notched the first of his two goals 4:09 into the second period, and Magrath followed with his first tally of the year to make it 4-0 at the 6:57 mark. Casey struck again at 11:56 of the second and Phillips recorded his first goal of the year at 17:14 to push the lead to 6-0 after two periods.
Franklin scored the Beavers' first power play goal of the year just 18 seconds after Southern Maine was whistled for a tripping penalty to make it 7-0 at 14:22 of the third period. Searles capped the scoring with his second tally of the year at the 17:30 mark.
Sophomore Matt Michals (Needham, Mass.) made 17 saves over the first two periods, while classmate Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.) stopped 12 third-period shots in relief for the Huskies.
Babson finished with a 37-18 edge in shots and went 1-for-2 on the power play. The Beavers, who have not allowed a power play goal this season, killed off four Southern Maine man-advantage chances.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as Babson travels to the University of New England, while the Huskies host UMass-Boston.
