Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Sophomore Charlie Ackerman (Bradenton, Fla.) scored twice and senior goaltender Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) made 21 saves as No. 6 D3hockey.com/No. 8 USCHO.com Babson College blanked Skidmore College, 4-0, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action on Friday night at the Saratoga City Rink.
With the victory, Babson is now 3-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play, while Skidmore drops to 0-4-0 overall and 0-3-0 in NEHC action.
Junior Dan Casey (Chatham, N.J.) and first-year Tommy Munichiello (Weymouth, Mass.) both scored once for the Beavers, who had 10 different players record a point. Seniors Jimmy Magrath (Medfield, Mass.) and Jared Wiedemann (Pembroke, Mass.), juniors Tim Searles (Chesapeake, Va.) and Michael Phillips (Richmond Heights, Ohio), sophomores Jake Donahue (Groveland, Mass.) and Bobby Hall (Westwood, Mass.) and first-year Matt Michalke (Parma, Ohio) all finished with one assist.
Following a scoreless first period, the Green and White took command of the game with a three-goal second period. Casey opened the scoring with his second goal of the year at the 4:12 mark, and Ackerman followed with his first of the night just 61 seconds later to make it 2-0. Munichiello then notched his second tally in as many games at 14:38 to extend the Beavers' lead to 3-0.
Babson killed off a holding penalty just 16 seconds into the third period, and Ackerman scored his team-leading third goal of the year at the 9:58 mark to make it a four-goal lead. The margin was more than enough for Murray, who made 18 of his 21 saves over the first two periods to post his first shutout of the season and the 13th of his career.
First-year Oscar Flory (Stockholm, Sweden), who made his second start of the year for the Thoroughbreds, finished with 35 saves on the night.
The Beavers finished with a 39-21 edge in shots, and the teams combined to go 0-for-6 on the power play.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as Babson travels to Castleton, while Skidmore hosts UMass-Boston.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are now 18-6-0 all-time against Skidmore and have won 11 of the last 14 games between the teams going back to 2010.
• The Green and White has now won 20 straight games in the month of November going back to 2012.
• The Beavers are now 8-for-8 on the penalty kill this season and is one of just six teams that has not allowed a power play goal on the year.
• Since allowing two goals in the first period of its season opener against Hobart on October 30, Babson has outscored its foes 10-1 over the last eight periods.
