Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Nik Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal at 11:23 of the second period and sophomore goaltender Jamie Murray (Sciuate, Mass.) set a new single-season program record with his fourth shutout of the season as No. 4 D3hockey.com/No. 5 USCHO.com Babson College blanked the University of Southern Maine, 3-0, in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East men's ice hockey action at the Babson Skating Center on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, Babson moves to 19-3-1 overall and 13-2-1 in the ECAC East, while Southern Maine drops to 5-13-5 overall and 4-10-2 in conference play.
The Beavers sit atop the conference standings, three points ahead of nationally-ranked Norwich with two games to go, and have locked up a top two seed and the right to host both a quarterfinal and semifinal in the upcoming ECAC East Tournament.
Senior Tom Callahan (Lakeville, Mass.) and junior Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) each scored for Babson, which struck three times in a span of 3:43 in the second period. Sophomore Mike Vollmin (Wilmington, N.C.) and first-year Michael Phillips (Richmond Heights, Ohio) both had two assists, while senior Matt Furey (Quincy, Mass.) chipped in with his sixth helper of the season.
The Beavers had a pair of power play opportunities in the first period and outshot the Huskies 11-9 but neither team was able to get on the board. After killing off a roughing penalty midway through the second period, the Green and White was able to take advantage of an extra man opportunity of its own as Tasiopoulos notched his sixth power play score of the year to go ahead 1-0.
Callahan followed with the second goal of his career just 2:16 late, redirecting a blast from the point by Vollmin to give Babson a two-goal lead at the 13:39 mark. Bonazza then capped the scoring with his ninth tally of the year, three of which have come on the power play, to make it 3-0 with 4:54 left in the second period.
That was more than enough for Murray and the Babson defense. The sophomore net minder made 27 saves to record his sixth career shutout. Murray leads the nation with 18 victories and lowered his goals against average to 1.54 on the year.
First-year Dylan Wells (Nashville, Tenn.) stopped 37 shots for the Huskies, who were outshot 40-27 and went 0-for-4 on the power play.
Both teams return to action on Friday at 7 p.m. as Babson travels to Norwich, which has captured 15 consecutive ECAC East regular season titles, while Southern Maine will host Saint Anselm.
GAME NOTES: The Beavers are now 18-8-1 all-time against Southern Maine and have swept the Huskies in back-to-back seasons…Babson is 17-0-0 on the year when leading after the second period and 13-1-0 when getting on the board first…The Beavers are unbeaten in its last 16 games (14-0-2) at the Babson Skating Center, including an 11-0-1 mark at home this season…Saturday marked the final regular season home game for Babson's 12 seniors. The Class of 2014 is 57-37-13 over the last four years which includes a 39-21-11 mark against conference foes. This group has made two ECAC East championship game appearances, claiming the conference tournament title last season and helping the program advance to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time since 1992.
