Big Second Period Helps Second-Seeded Babson Advance Past Southern Maine, 6-0

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Second-seeded Babson College erupted for five second-period goals and turned in a tremendous defensive effort en route to a 6-0 victory over seventh-seeded University of Southern Maine in a Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East quarterfinal on Saturday night at the Babson Skating Center.

With the victory, eighth-ranked Babson moves to 20-4-2 on the year and advances to the conference semifinals for the 10th time in the last 12 seasons. Southern Maine sees its season come to an end at 6-15-5.

Junior Mike Driscoll (Milton, Mass.) and sophomore Mike Vollmin (Wilmington, N.C.) each had a goal and an assist for the Beavers, who had six different players score and 12 players record a point. Seniors Matt Furey (Quincy, Mass.) and Matt O'Neill (Norwell, Mass.), along with first-years Dan Casey (Chatham, N.J.) and Tim Searles (Chesapeake, Va.) each tallied once.

Sophomore goaltender Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) made eight of his 15 saves in the first period for the Green and White, which allowed just 16 shots on goal while blocking another eight shots. Senior Danny Rivellini (Great Falls, Va.) stopped one shot after relieving Murray with 4:38 to go in the third period.

After a scoreless first period, Vollmin opened the scoring just 39 seconds into the second period with his fourth goal of the season. The Huskies were called for a hooking penalty 34 seconds in and first-year Michael Phillips (Richmond Heights, Ohio) won the face-off back to Vollmin who ripped a shot from the point that beat first-year goaltender Dylan Wells (Nashville, Tenn.) for a 1-0 lead.

Driscoll struck for his 12th goal of the year at the 3:41 mark and Casey added his third tally of the season at 6:59 to give the Beavers a 3-0 lead. O'Neill made it 4-0 at 10:25, converting assists from seniors Pat Gurerriero (New York, N.Y.) and Ryan Heavey (Andover, Mass.), and Furey followed with a power play score, assisted by seniors Ben Kravitz (Huntington, N.Y.) and Troy Starrett (Bellingham, Mass.) to push the lead to five at 12:47 of the second period.

Searles scored Babson's final goal of the night off a rebound at 5:05 of the third period and the defense preserved its fifth shutout of the season by allowing just five shots on goal over the final 20 minutes.

Wells finished with 21 saves over the first two periods of play before giving way to sophomore Josh Hillegas (Middleton, Wisc.), who stopped 16 shots in the third period for Southern Maine.

The Beavers, who held a 32-8 edge in shots on goal over the final two periods, went 2-for-4 on the power play. The Huskies finished 0-for-2 on their power play opportunities.

Babson returns to action next Saturday when it hosts third-seeded UMass-Boston at 7 p.m.

GAME NOTES: Babson is now 19-8-1 all-time against Southern Maine and has won five straight games over the Huskies…the Beavers are 12-0-1 at home this season and are unbeaten in their last 17 games (15-0-2) at the Babson Skating Center going back to last season…Babson is now 16-2-1 when allowing two goals or less on the year and has given up just three goals over the last five games…the Beavers are 14-1-1 when scoring first on the season.
