Box Score WORCESTER, Mass.—Senior Trevor Boyce (Canton, Mass.) went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and five runs batted in, both season-highs, and every starter had at least one hit as visiting Babson College overpowered Clark University, 17-5, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Granger Field.
Babson, who won two of the three games against Clark this weekend, moves to 14-12 overall and 8-7 in NEWMAC play while the Cougars drop to 8-21 overall and 2-12 in the conference.
Senior Conor Kortmann (Manalapan, N.J.) had three hits on the day and drove in four runs while classmate Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass.) had three hits, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice to help pace the Beavers' 18-hit attack. First-year George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) and sophomore Rob Caggiano (Medford, Mass.) each had two hits apiece and drove in a run.
After rallying to split a doubleheader with a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday afternoon, Babson wasted little time in taking command of the game on Sunday, scoring 14 runs in the first four innings. Boyce and Kucher had RBI doubles to jump start a four-run first and Kortmann produced a two-out single to left center field to score a pair for a 6-1 lead after two.
The Beavers put together another four-run rally in the third inning, all with two outs, as junior Brendan Collins (Abington, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch, senior John Botelho (Tempe, Ariz.) scored on a double steal and Kortman plated Boyce and sophomore Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass.) with a single up the middle for a 10-1 lead. The Beavers tacked on four more runs in the fourth as Boyce tripled with the bases loaded and Kucher followed with an infield single to take a 14-1 advantage.
Junior Matt Grenier (Rochester, N.H.) won for the third time in his last three starts, allowing four earned runs on 12 hits while striking out three in eight innings. First-year
Nick Ahearn (Norfolk, Mass.) tossed a scoreless ninth inning and hasn't allowed a run in 9 1/3 innings dating back to March 16.
Babson is back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Curry for a 3:30pm start while Clark hosts Anna Maria on Tuesday at 5:00pm.
