Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C.,--Visiting Babson College scored the final six goals of regulation to force overtime but first-year Mary Clare Regan (Ocean City, Md.) scored her fourth goal of the day on a free position shot with 57 seconds remaining in the extra period as No. 14 Catholic University held on for a thrilling 15-14 victory over the Beavers in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Monday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium.
Catholic University snapped a three-game losing streak with the win and moved to 2-3 overall while Babson dropped to 1-3 after dropping its second straight one-goal decision in overtime.
The Cardinals took their biggest lead of the game at 13-7 with 18:57 remaining in the game, capping a five-goal run to break the game open. Senior Taylor Kralovenec (Cos Cob, Conn.) got the comeback started for the Beavers with an unassisted score at the 15:14 mark, followed by a pair of goals from junior Misha Beatty (Westwood, Mass.) just 1:57 apart cut the deficit to 13-10 with 9:38 remaining. Sophomore Rachel Secrist (Westford, Mass.) tallied twice, cutting the score to 13-12 at the 2:05 mark, and Beattly tied the game on a free position shot with 1:03 to go to closeout regulation.
Beatty open the scoring just 46 seconds into the first half of the overtime period with a man-up goal on another free position attempt to give Babson its first lead since 1-0 just 38 seconds into the game. Catholic rallied to tie the game 51 seconds into the second half of the extra session when sophomore Lindsay Brophy (Haddonfield, N.J.) scored her fourth goal of the day, setting up Regan's heroics.
After the teams traded goals in the opening six-plus minutes, Catholic scored four straight times to take a 6-2 lead with 18:16 left in the first half. A pair of free position shots by Kralovenec sandwiched around a score from Secrist brought the Beavers back within 7-6 with 8:56 to go before halftime. The teams traded the next four goals before Regan keyed the five-goal Catholic run scoring three times after Babson senior Jameson Spang (Kennebunk, Maine) had cut the lead to 8-7 just 5:01 into the second half.
Beatty finished with a season-high six goals to lead the Beavers to go along with a team-high five draw controls and game-high two caused turnovers. Kralovenec and Secrist each added three goals apiece, Spang scored twice, and first-year Kayla Farina (Newton, Mass.) notched three assists.
Junior goalie Julie Baharestani (Syosset, N.Y.) made a season-high 13 saves for the Beavers while sophomore Tricia Pehnke (West Windsor, N.J.) and junior Yamseen Ajdari (Bethesda, Md.) combined to make 14 stops for the Cardinals.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday afternoon as Babson heads south to face No. 20 Mary Washington University at 4:00pm while Catholic
will host top-ranked Trinity College on Wednesday at 3:30pm.
