Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Nik Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass.) had a goal and an assist, while first-years Dan Casey (Chatham, N.J.) and Michael Phillips (Richmond Heights, Ohio) each notched their first career goals, helping 11th-ranked Babson College pick up a 3-1 victory over visiting Saint Anselm College in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East men's hockey action on Friday night at the Babson Skating Center.
The win helps Babson move to 2-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in league play on the year, while Saint Anselm drops to 0-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference.
Seniors Connor Berto (Lake Forest, Ill.), Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia), and Troy Starrett (Bellingham, Mass.), along with sophomore Max Franklin (Wrentham, Mass.) all recorded an assist in the victory.
Senior Joe Tebano (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored the Hawks' lone goal while juniors Sean Jenkins (Boston, Mass.) and Johnny Daniels (Andover, Mass.) each had an assist.
After a hard-hitting first period that saw the teams combine for just 14 shots, Saint Anselm opened the scoring 7:20 into the second period. Babson was able to kill off an interference penalty, but just two seconds after getting back to full strength, Tebano beat sophomore goalie Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) with a shot from the left face-off circle to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The Beavers wasted little time in pulling even though, as Casey was able to score off the rebound of a Tasiopoulos shot just 93 seconds later. First-year Bill Seligman (Toronto, Ontario) nearly put the hosts in front at the 9:30 mark, but his shot off a pass from Bonazza was kicked away by Hawks senior goalie Nick Dries (Commerce Township, Mich.). Murray then denied Jenkins at 12:05, who came streaking down the right wing as part of a two-on-one, to keep the game deadlocked.
Phillips gave Babson the lead for good with just 3:51 left in the second period, converting a feed from Starrett and Berto. Dries was able to make a save on a blast by senior Ben Kravitz (Huntington, N.Y.) from the point, but Starrett found Phillips just outside the crease to make it 2-1 through two periods.
Tasiopoulos notched his first goal of the season on the power play 6:19 into the third period for a two-goal advantage, and the Beavers defense shut things down over the final 20 minutes. Saint Anselm mustered only four shots on Murray in the final period, while the Green and White blocked seven other attempts, to open ECAC East play with a victory.
Murray, who is the reigning conference Goalie of the Week, made 23 saves on the night for Babson, while Dries stopped 30 shots for the Hawks.
The Beavers went 1-for-2 for the game on the power play and were able to kill off all four of Saint Anselm's extra-man opportunities. The hosts also held a 33-24 advantage in the face-off circle.
Both teams return to action on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. as Babson hosts New England College and Saint Anselm travels to nationally-ranked UMass-Boston.
