Women's Lax Builds Early Lead, Hangs On to Beat Endicott, 15-14

BEVERLY, Mass.—Visiting Babson College scored seven straight first half goals and built a 12-3 lead over the first 32 minutes of the game before hanging on for a 15-14 win over Endicott College in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Thursday afternoon.

With its 10th straight win, Babson improved to 11-2 overall as the Beavers were led by five goals from junior Jameson Spang (Kennebunk, Maine) and four goals from junior Taylor Kralovenec (Cos Cob, Conn.). Sophomore Misha Beatty (Westwood, Mass.) scored twice and added an assist, while senior Trisha Babson (Duxbury, Mass.) and first-year Rachel Secrist (Westford, Mass.) each contributed a goal and an assist, respectively. Sophomore goalie Julie Baharestani (Syosset, N.Y.) made seven saves between the pipes including one in the final minute of the game to keep the Beavers in front. She also collected a team-high three ground balls.

Gulls sophomore midfielder Callie Murphy (Woburn, Mass.) scored four of her team-high five goals in the second half as she led the Endicott comeback.  Michelle Loizzo (Longmeadow, Mass.) turned in an impressive Senior Day performance, scoring four goals on four shot attempts. Morgan DeShaw (Danville, N.H.) along with junior Lauren Todd (Newfields, N.H.) each had three assists in the loss.

Senior Leah Neff (South Berwick, Maine) took the loss but was solid was eight saves and four groundballs. 

Two early goals and a tally from junior Emma Locke (Boxford, Mass.) gave Babson a 3-2 advantage at the 19:38 mark of the first half. The Beavers took charge from there, scoring the next seven goals to grab a 10-2 lead with 2:43 remaining in the half. Senior Bridget McCurdy (Weston, Mass.) and Beatty scored unassisted goals to get the run started before Spang scored four the next five goals for Babson. Loizzo closed the first half scoring for Endicott with the first of her three tallies and the Beavers leading 10-3.

At the start of the second half, Babson continued their impressive play as Secrist and Trisha Babson scored back-to-back goals to give the Beavers' their biggest lead of the day at 12-3.

Goals by Loizzo, Kelley Tierney (South Hadley, Mass.) and Murphy cut the deficit down to six with 24:56 remaining.  Another two goals by Babson stretched lead out to 14-6 but Endicott once again fought back with four more goals, including three on free position attempts, to make it 14-10. 

Kralovenec scored her final goal of the game, but Murphy exploded for three tallies in-a-row followed by Holly Davis' (Guildford, Conn.) only goal of the game to make it a one-goal game at 15-14 Babson. 

In the final minute, Endicott forced a turnover and raced down the field looking to tie it up but DeShaw's shot with 53 seconds remaining was saved by Baharestani.  Endicott caused another turnover with 21 seconds left but the Gulls would not be able to attempt another shot on goal.

The Beavers held an 18-13 advantage on draw controls as Babson collected a game-high nine while sophomore Ali Korinis (Ridgewood, N.J.) had three. McCurdy and fellow senior Taylor Wailes (Andover, Mass.) each picked up two ground balls and Kralovenec caused a team-high two turnovers.

Endicott's Rachel Campos (Shrewsbury, Mass.) tied Neff with a team-high four draw controls.  Campos also had two caused turnovers. 

The Gulls (9-5) took time before the game to honor seniors Morgan DeShaw, Michelle Loizzo, Leah Neff, and Deven Tentindo (Stratham, N.H.)  who over their four years, accumulated a 57-22 overall record, including a 45-1 conference mark, and three consecutive CCC Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances.

Endicott wraps up the regular season with a league match up against Nichols in Dudley on Saturday, April 21st at 11:30 am.  Babson hosts Wellesley on the same day at 1:00 pm to end their regular season play.  Both teams have locked up the top seed in their upcoming conference tournaments.
