Southern Maine Upsets Ice Hockey, 2-1, In ECAC East Quarterfinals

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Senior captain Dan Rautenberg (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored two goals in the second period to propel the sixth-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1 victory over third-seeded Babson College in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 ECAC East Men's Ice Hockey Tournament at the Babson Skating Center on Saturday night. With the win, the Huskies (10-10-6) advance to next weekend's semifinal round at a site and time to be determined following the completion of the night's other quarterfinal matchups.

With only the second loss in their last 12 games, the Beavers see their season come to an close with a record of 9-13-4.

Babson grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first, beginning when senior captain Mike Hoban (Medfield, Mass.) fed the puck to first-year Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) near the lower left circle. The freshman then sent a pass across the crease to classmate Mike Driscoll (Milton, Mass.), who backhanded a shot from a tough angle past USM sophomore goalie Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) for his team-leading 10th goal of the season at 3:23.

The Beavers continued to dominate the first period of play, eventually taking a 15-1 shot advantage into the first intermission. However, Torris surrendered just the one goal as Babson carried a slim 1-0 edge into the second.

Southern Maine evened the score in the opening moments of the second, beginning when first-year Brad McGovern (Haverhill, Mass.) poke-checked the puck away from a Babson player in the neutral zone. Rautenberg then picked it up and broke in alone on the Beavers' Zeke Testa (Wellesley, Mass.), beating the junior goaltender on the glove side from point-blank range for his ninth goal of the winter at 1:29.

Rautenberg struck again later in the period, this time on the powerplay after Babson was whistled for too many men on the ice. Taking a feed from junior Jon Grandinetti (Ottawa, Ontario), the senior captain blasted a slapshot from the left point that glanced off a defenseman and caromed into the upper left corner of the Babson net, giving Southern Maine a 2-1 lead at 14:29. Sophomore Mike Greene (Arvada, Colo.) also picked up an assist on the goal, which was Rautenberg's second of the night and team-leading 10th of the season.

The Beavers had two great chances to pull even later in the second. The first came when senior Cody Carlson (Peterborough, N.H.) found sophomore Troy Starrett (Bellingham, Mass.) wide-open on the right side of a 2-on-1 break with just under five minutes left in the period, but Torris made a magnificent glove save on a shot headed for the upper right corner. Babson then threatened again in the final 30 seconds, but Bonazza's wrister from the left faceoff circle went just over the crossbar.

The Beavers' best chance of the third period came three and a half minutes in, when Torris denied sophomore Matt O'Neill's (Norwell, Mass.) slapper but failed to corral the rebound. He then made a brilliant kick save on junior Jay Haseley's (Rochester, N.Y.) follow-up bid to keep his team in front.

After coming up empty on a powerplay late in the third, Babson pulled Testa for an extra skater for the final 1:04. However, Southern Maine did not allow a shot on net during that span as the Huskies held on for the 2-1 victory.

Torris finished with 28 saves in net for Southern Maine, while Testa turned away 16 shots in net for Babson.
