Box Score NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Freshman defenseman Steve Ginand (Milford, MA/Northern Cyclones) scored on an odd-man rush 3:02 into overtime to lift the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth ice hockey team past visiting Babson, 2-1,in a non-conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Saturday.
After Babson freshman Andrew Bonazza's (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia/Valley Jr. Warriors) shot was blocked in front of the Corsair net, Ginand took a clearing pass from junior defenseman Zach Hepler (Sarver, PA/Dixie Beehives-OPJHL) and led a 3-on-1 rush into the Babson zone. Carrying the puck down the right side, Ginand kept it himself and wristed a shot past Babson senior goaltender Andrew Peabody (Marblehead, MA/St. Paul's School) on the glove side to end the game.
The goal was Ginand's second of the game. He fired a slap shot past a screened Peabody at 7:30 of the third period to break a scoreless tie. Hepler and senior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) assisted on the powerplay goal.
Senior forward Mike Hoban (Medfield, MA/St. Sebastian's School) tied the game less than 90 seconds later, converting a pass from junior forward PT Donato (Arlington, MA/St. Sebastian's School) on a perfectly executed 3-on-2 rush at 8:58. Junior forward Trevor Hines (Newburyport, MA/The Governor's Academy) gained control of the puck along the left boards, carried it over the blue line and fired a centering pass to Donato. The junior forward then flicked a pass to a streaking Hoban on the right side, and the Beavers' senior captain buried it inside the near post to even the contest at 1-1.
Babson's penalty-kill unit fought off another UMD powerplay over the final 1:32 of regulation and the first 28 seconds of the overtime period, only to have Ginand seal the Corsair victory two and a half minutes later.
The Beavers outshot the Corsairs, 37-23, in the contest, including a dominating 19-3 advantage in a scoreless first period. UMD junior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) made 36 saves, while Peabody stopped 21 shots for Babson. UMD converted one of their five powerplay opportunities, while blanking Babson on their three chances.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 7-3-1 with the victory, while Babson fell to 3-10-0 with the defeat. UMD will return to action when they host Worcester State Thursday evening. The Beavers will play Norwich next Friday at Fenway Park as part of Sun Life Frozen Fenway 2012.
