Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. -— Senior Cody Carlson (Peterborough, N.H.) tallied three goals in a span of 2:37 in the final minutes of regulation to bring the Babson College men's ice hockey team back from a 4-1 deficit en route to a 4-4 overtime tie with the New England College Pilgrims in ECAC East action on Saturday afternoon. With the deadlock, the Pilgrims now sit at 8-6-2 overall and 5-3-2 in ECAC East action, while the visiting Beavers are now 5-11-1 overall and 5-4-1 in league play.
Babson would tally the lone goal of the first period at the 9:06 mark as Ryan Smith (Lynnfield, Mass.) connected on passes from Shayne Anderson (Dorchester, Mass.) and Dan Ahern (Melrose, Mass.).
Down 1-0 entering the second period, the Pilgrims took the lead with back-to-back goals. Ben Souders (Downington, Pa.) would tally the first at the 11:28 mark on a tip from just outside the crease. The Pilgrims would then take the 2-1 lead with just 1:56 remaining in the second as Jarkko Leppanen (Tampere, Finland) registered his fourth goal of the season from just outside the left circle.
The Pilgrims would take the 3-1 lead 56 seconds into the third period on a Niko Uola (Turku, Finland) goal and a 4-1 advantage almost 13 minutes later on a goal by Johan Qvarfordt (Sodertalje, Sweden). Following a Babson timeout at the 15:40 mark, the Beavers would pull goaltender Zeke Testa (Wellesley, Mass.) to skate the extra offensive player.
The strategy would work in favor of the Beavers, as Carlson would score three times in a span of 2:37 to tie the score at 4-4 and force overtime. It was the first career hat trick for Carlson, who now has five goals and two assists on the season.
New England College goaltender Shawn Sirman (Blezard Valley, Ontario) totaled 36 saves in net for the Pilgrims. Testa posted 30 saves in just under 61 minutes in goal for the Beavers, who are now 2-0-1 since snapping their six-game losing streak back on January 14.
