Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College senior captain Mike Hoban (Medfield, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 1:19 remaining in overtime as the Beavers defeating visiting Saint Michael's College, 4-3, in an ECAC East men's ice hockey contest at the Babson Skating Center on Saturday afternoon.
The victory snapped a six-game slide for the Beavers, who improved to 4-11-0 overall and 4-4-0 in ECAC East play. Meanwhile, Saint Michael's suffered its second defeat in a row to fall to 3-8-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the conference.
Hoban's game-winner game just four seconds after a face-off win by first-year Mike Driscoll (Norwell, Mass.) in the right circle of the Purple Knights' defensive zone. The puck went directly to fellow freshman Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia), who sent an immediate centering pass to Hoban in the slot. The senior forward's ensuing one-timer then trickled over the goal line just inside the left post for the game-ending goal at 3:41. It was Hoban's fourth of the season.
Babson had the best chance of the scoreless first period, when Hoban took a feed from behind the net and one-timed a low shot from just outside the crease. However, Saint Michael's freshman goalie Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec) got his right pad down in time to deflect the puck up and over the net with just over a minute remaining in the session.
After coming up empty in the first 20 minutes of action, the two teams combined for five goals in an action-packed second period. The Purple Knights started things off with the game's first goal just 15 seconds in, as junior Rich Rodeschini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) received a pass along the right boards, rushed in on senior goalie Andrew Peabody (Marblehead, Mass.), and flicked a shot into the upper right corner for his first of the season.
Babson tied the game at 5:13 of the second, as junior PT Donato (Arlington, Mass.) fired a pass to the top of the slot, where sophomore Ryan Heavey (Andover, Mass.) ripped a shot off the crossbar and in for his first goal of the season. The Beavers then grabbed their first lead of the contest just over five minutes later, as sophomore Troy Starrett (Bellingham, Mass.) took a cross-ice pass from junior Jay Haseley (Rochester, N.Y.) and blasted a slapper from the right circle into the top left corner at 10:14.
Saint Michael's evened the contest with the game's lone powerplay score later in the second, as freshman A.J. Pieprzak (Barrie, Ontario) one-timed a centering pass from senior Brady Earle (Columbia, Md.) past Peabody at 11:50. The Purple Knights then regained the advantage with less than a minute to go in the period, when junior Tim McCauliffe (North Reading, Mass.) intercepted an attempted Babson clear from behind the net and wristed a shot inside the right post from the right circle at 19:07.
After Dizgun made a number of fantastic saves to keep his team in front early in the third, Babson finally pulled even on sophomore Tom Callahan's (Lakeville, Mass.) first collegiate goal at 14:13. Taking consecutive feeds from Bonazza and Driscoll, Callahan fired a shot from the right point that made it past a screened Dizgun and into the lower right corner for the game-tying goal with 5:47 left in regulation.
Peabody finished with 21 saves in the winning effort for Babson, while Dizgun stopped a total of 40 shots in defeat for Saint Michael's.
