Ice Hockey Falls To No. 1 Norwich In Once-in-a-Lifetime Extravaganza

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Norwich University scored three goals in the second period to defeat Babson College, 4-1, in matchup of ECAC East rivals as part of Sun Life Frozen Fenway 2012 on Saturday afternoon. The contest, which was played under extremely windy conditions and sporadic flurries, was the first-ever between Division III foes at the venerable ballpark and home of the Boston Red Sox.

Ranked number one in the nation in the most recent U.S. College Hockey Online poll, Norwich improved to 11-0-1 overall and 7-0-0 in conference play, while Babson slipped to 3-11-0 overall and 3-4 in the ECAC East.

Playing in the shadow of the fabled Green Monster, Babson made history when first-year Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) scored the park's first-ever Division III hockey goal on a powerplay at 6:24 of the opening period. Junior PT Donato (Arlington, Mass.) dug the puck out behind the net and flicked a backhanded pass in front, where Bonazza one-timed it into the lower right corner for his fifth goal of the year and a 1-0 Beaver lead.

From there it was all Norwich, which finished the game with four unanswered scores – two apiece from sophomore Shane Gorman (Trumbull, Conn.) and first-year Doug Lindensmith (Sterling Heights, Mich.). The run began with Gorman's tying goal at 12:05 of the first period. Taking a feed up the right side from senior Emmond Bell (Nepean, Ontario), the sophomore forward broke in on net but had his first shot denied by Babson junior goalie Zeke Testa (Wellesley, Mass.). Gorman then collected his own rebound and tucked it inside the right post for his fourth goal of the winter, knotting the game at 1-1. First-year Alec Thieda (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Bell were credited with assists on the play.

The Cadets grabbed the lead on their first powerplay of the game early in the second, as Lindensmith sent the puck into the crease from behind the next. It then deflected off a Babson defenseman's skate and slipped past a lunging Testa, settling into the lower right corner at 3:12. It was Lindensmith's eighth goal of the season, with assists going to junior Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) and junior Kyle Thomas (Waltham, Mass.).

Gorman made it a two-goal lead with his second of the evening at 7:17 of the second, with the Cadets once again striking from behind the Beaver net. This time, Gorman carried the puck around the goal cage and fired a shot from the left side that glanced off Testa and trickled over the goal line. The sophomore's fifth goal of the year came off feeds from sophomores Chris Duszynski (Ototoks, Alberta) and Frank Gatien (Boucherville, Quebec) and made it a 3-1 contest.

Lindensmith capped off the Cadets' dominant second period with his second of the night, once again converting feeds from Cotnoir and Thomas as he found the five-hole from the low crease at 18:22. Neither team would score in the lightning-fast third period as Norwich skated away with the 4-1 victory.

Testa finished with 31 saves in defeat for the Beavers, while sophomore Parker Carroll (West Chester, Pa.) turned away 18 shots in collecting his eight victory of the season for the Cadets.

Other than the final score, it was an otherwise glorious experience for the Beavers, who dressed in the Red Sox' batting cage and entered the field through the home team's dugout. Among the many fine touches by the Fenway Park staff, the score was shown not only on the video board in centerfield, but also on the manual scoreboard on the famous leftfield wall. The contest also featured Babson's public address announcer Mike Riley, while Norwich alumna Paula Gills sang the Canadian and American National Anthems.
