BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team
scored the first eight goals of the game en route to a 16-5 win
over Babson in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament
on Wednesday evening at Ryan Field. The Polar Bears (15-3), ranked
11th in the latest IWLCA poll, tie a school record with their 15th
win of the season and advance to play Stevens Institute at Trinity
College on Saturday at 2:30. The Beavers end their season with a
record of 10-8.
Liz Clegg led the way for Bowdoin with four goals and an assist
while Carolyn Gorajek added three goals and two assists. Katie
Herter also scored three times for the Polar Bears. Five different
players scored for Babson, led by a goal and an assist apiece from
juniors Trisha Babson and Colleen
Mulligan.
After Katy Dissinger put Bowdoin into the scoring column two
minutes into the contest, the Beavers had an extended possession in
an attempt to tie the game in the early going. But Polar Bear
goaltender Tara Connolly made a pair of key saves on
sophomore Jamie Sprang and senior
captain Alyssa Hood to maintain the one-goal
lead. Bowdoin's offense starting clicking shortly thereafter, as
the hosts rolled off seven goals in a span of 9:12 to take control
of the game. Katie Stewart, Herter and Clegg each scored twice in
the run.
Babson scored consecutive goals, courtesy of Mulligan and
first-year Morgan Lockwood, to trim the lead to
8-2 with 5:51 remaining in the opening half. But the Polar Bears
quickly pushed the lead back to eight goals before intermission and
scored the first three goals of the second half to take an
insurmountable 13-2 lead with 22:42 to go.
Connolly was outstanding in net for Bowdoin, stopping 10 shots
and collecting five ground balls. Babson committed 25 turnovers,
with the Polar Bears forcing 17, including a team-high five caused
turnovers from Herter. Senior captain Sarah Macary
made 13 stops in net for the Beavers, who got five caused turnovers
from senior Kristy Benoit and six draw controls
from Trisha Babson. Bowdoin held a 38-21 advantage in shots.
