BOX SCORE

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team scored the first eight goals of the game en route to a 16-5 win over Babson in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Wednesday evening at Ryan Field. The Polar Bears (15-3), ranked 11th in the latest IWLCA poll, tie a school record with their 15th win of the season and advance to play Stevens Institute at Trinity College on Saturday at 2:30. The Beavers end their season with a record of 10-8.

Liz Clegg led the way for Bowdoin with four goals and an assist while Carolyn Gorajek added three goals and two assists. Katie Herter also scored three times for the Polar Bears. Five different players scored for Babson, led by a goal and an assist apiece from juniors Trisha Babson and Colleen Mulligan.

After Katy Dissinger put Bowdoin into the scoring column two minutes into the contest, the Beavers had an extended possession in an attempt to tie the game in the early going. But Polar Bear goaltender Tara Connolly made a pair of key saves on sophomore Jamie Sprang and senior captain Alyssa Hood to maintain the one-goal lead. Bowdoin's offense starting clicking shortly thereafter, as the hosts rolled off seven goals in a span of 9:12 to take control of the game. Katie Stewart, Herter and Clegg each scored twice in the run.

Babson scored consecutive goals, courtesy of Mulligan and first-year Morgan Lockwood, to trim the lead to 8-2 with 5:51 remaining in the opening half. But the Polar Bears quickly pushed the lead back to eight goals before intermission and scored the first three goals of the second half to take an insurmountable 13-2 lead with 22:42 to go.

Connolly was outstanding in net for Bowdoin, stopping 10 shots and collecting five ground balls.
