WORCESTER, Mass. – Trevor Bryce (Canton,
Mass.) singled home Travis Jonasson (Needham,
Mass.) in the top of tenth inning to push visiting Babson
College to a 2-1 win over Clark University in New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball
action on Friday afternoon.
The Beavers improved to 18-7 on the season with a 10-5 record in
league games, while the Cougars, in the midst of an
eight-games-in-seven-days stretch, slip to 13-12 overall and 3-9 in
conference contests.
Starting pitchers Benjamin Seel (Oakland, Maine) and
Dave Ahern (Bedford, Mass.) locked into a
pitcher's duel that saw both pitch into the tenth inning.
Seel opened the game by striking out the side in the first and
giving up just one hit in the first seven innings, while Ahern gave
up just three hits in his first six innings of work.
Clark broke the scoreless tie in the sixth when Jeremy Gerber
(Amherst, Mass.) singled to right and then moved to third on a
failed pickoff attempt that resulted in an error by Ahern. He then
scored on an infield single by Matthew Bohl (Amherst, Mass.).
Babson finally broke through in the top of the eighth, when
Corey Highfield (East Hampstead, N.H.) led off the
inning with a solid single to center and then went to second on a
sacrifice by Boyce. Pat Matvichuk (Middleton,
Mass.) then singled to right, bringing home pinch-runner
Joe Nixon (Foxboro, Mass.) with the game's
equalizing run.
Clark put a runner on second in the bottom of the frame with two
outs, but Ahern got Peter Lewis (Gardiner, Maine) to fly out to
center to end the threat.
Seel bounced back in the ninth, retiring the Beavers in order
before starting the top of the tenth with a walk to Jonasson.
Robert Lopez (Copake, N.Y.) relieved Seel and walked Chris
Kucher (Westwood, Mass.) to put runners on first and
second with no outs. After a successful sacrifice by Nixon moved
both men into scoring position, Boyce then recorded his
game-winning hit to give Babson a 2-1 lead.
Ahern went the distance for the Beavers, scattering eight hits
and striking out five while allowing one earned run. Seel,
meanwhile, took the loss after going nine-plus innings and yielding
just three hits and two earned runs while striking out a
career-best seven.
Bohl went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base for Clark and
Gerber was 2-for-4.
These same two teams will meet on Saturday for a doubleheader
beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Babson.
