BOX SCORE
BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College freshman Matt
O'Neill (Norwell, Mass.) scored the go-ahead goal
with just over three minutes remaining, but Saint Anselm sophomore
Timothy King (Weymouth, Mass.) answered with only 24.7 seconds left
as the Beavers and Hawks skated to a 3-3 overtime tie in ECAC East
men's ice hockey action at the Babson Skating Center on
Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Zeke Testa (Wellesley, Mass.)
finished an outstanding effort in net with 34 saves for the
Beavers, while freshman Robert Kang (Glen Rock, N.J.) turned away
25 shots in goal for the Hawks.
Babson got on the board first midway through the opening period,
as sophomore Ryan Smith (Lynnfield, Mass.) tipped
a shot by first-year Matt Furey (Quincy, Mass.)
through Kang's legs for his eighth goal of the season at
10:16.
Saint Anselm tied the game with a powerplay score early in the
second, as senior captain Coleman Noonan (Norfolk, Mass.) put back
a rebound of sophomore Tucker Mullin's (Andover, Mass.) shot
for his seventh of the year at 6:18. The Hawks then moved in front
at 17:35 of the same period, when Mullin lifted goal into the upper
right corner on a breakaway for his ninth of the campaign and a 2-1
Saint Anselm lead.
Babson knotted the score at 2-2 in the opening minute of the
third, as Furey fired a shot from the left point that was tipped
through the five-hole by junior Mike Hoban (Medfield,
Mass.) for his sixth goal of the year just 34 seconds into
the session. The Beavers then regained the lead with a powerplay
goal at 16:50, as O'Neill tipped first-year Ryan
Heavey's (Andover, Mass.) blast from the left point
over Kang's right shoulder for his sixth of the season to
make it 3-2.
After emptying its net for an extra skater with just over a
minute left to play, Saint Anselm tied the score again when senior
Paul Snell's (Groton, Mass.) slapper from the blue line
ricocheted off King's skate in front and into the lower right
corner with just 24.7 seconds left in regulation. It was
King's eighth goal of the winter.
Both goalies played well in the overtime session, with Testa
turning away five shots and Kang stopping three as the contest
ended in a 3-3 tie.
Saturday's game also featured a special fund-raising event
for the Thomas E. Smith Fight To Cure Paralysis Foundation. In
addition to a special raffle that was held at the game, the Babson
Skating Center donated all admissions proceeds from the contest to
the Foundation, totaling more than $1,200 in the effort to cure
paralysis.
