SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The fifth seed Babson College hockey
team will return to the ECAC East semifinals after a 5-0
quarterfinal win over fourth seed Skidmore College on Saturday
night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
The Thoroughbreds end the season at 9-14-3, while the Beavers
take a 10-13-3 record into next Friday's semifinal against
Castleton State College at Norwich University.
Sophomore Zeke Testa earned Babson's
first shutout of the season and the third of his career with 28
saves.
Beaver freshman defenseman Ryan Heavey scored
the lone first period goal at 18:21 from classmates Matt
O'Neill and Ben Kravitz.
Skidmore was unable to capitalize on an early power-play
opportunity after Babson was called for a five-minute major at 3:28
of the first. The Thoroughbreds went 0-3 on the power play in the
opening period.
In the second, Heavey made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 4:28
from sophomore Ryan Smith and O'Neill.
Junior Sean Roche scored his first goal of the
season at 9:49 from freshman Jay Haseley and
junior Cody Carlson to extend the Babson lead to
3-0 after two.
The Beavers went up 4-0 in early in the third when senior
captain Jason Schneider scored his 10th of the
year at 3:10. Haseley wrapped the Babson scoring at 14:01 from
O'Neill and Smith.
Skidmore finished the night 0-6 on the power play, while Babson
converted on two of its four chances.
Thoroughbred Colin Bessey played the first 29:49 and had 16
saves, while Andrew Ross had 17 saves over the final 30:11.
