Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -– Despite a scare in the second period, two powerplay goals from Ridge Garbutt helped lift the Utica College men's hockey team to a 6-2 win over Babson College in the Cardinal Classic consolation game at the Stafford Ice Arena Saturday afternoon.
Utica (9-4-0) opened the scoring at 2:01 of the first period on a goal from Josh Schmitt. Evan Chlanda and Garbutt assisted on the goal as the Pioneers took the 1-0 lead to the locker room at the end of the first period.
Babson (3-9-0) tied it up with just over a minute gone in the second period on a goal from Jay Haseley. Eight minutes later, Matt Leer gave the Beavers a 2-1 lead from Andrew Bonazza and Matt O'Neill.
It was all Utica from that point forward as George Lotito tied it up at two-all on his third of the year at 16:03. With one second remaining in the second and the Pioneers on the power play, senior forward Tim Coffman knocked home the go-ahead goal off a scrum in front of the net.
The Pioneers tallied three more goals in the final 20 minutes of play. Garbutt scored his first of the night at 1:56, banging in his own rebound from Coffman and Steve Zappia. Trever Hertz stretched the lead to 5-2 at 5:39 when he gained possession of the puck just inside the blue line and found the back of the net with an unassisted short-handed goal.
Garbutt made it 6-2 at the 8:05 mark on a tic-tac-toe play from Evan Chlanda and Trever Hertz.
The Pioneers held a 32-23 edge in shots on goal. Pioneers' goaltender Evan Smith made 21 saves, improving to 5-3-0 on the year. Babson goalie Zeke Testa turned away 26 shots in the loss.
