Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -– Brothers Alex and Nick Jensen tallied a combined five points Friday night as the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team shutout the Babson Beavers, 5-0, in the second game of the Cardinal Classic at the Stafford Ice Arena.
Despite the Cardinals having the better of the opportunities in the opening period, the two teams remained scoreless after one.
Alex Brenton put Plattsburgh (7-2-3) on the board with his first of the year at the 2:40 mark of the second period. Alex Jensen and Nick Jensen assisted on the eventual game-winner. Four minutes later, Kyle Taylor knocked one past Babson goaltender Zeke Testa to make it 2-0. Jared Docking and Kyle Kudroch picked up assists on the Cardinal goal.
At 10:30 of the second on a 3-on-1, Nick Jensen gave his brother a centering pass and Alex Jensen found the back of the net to stretch the Plattsburgh lead to 3-0. Nick Jensen followed it up with a goal of his own at 13:43 from Paul Puglisi and Alex Brenton.
Matt MacLeod tacked on an insurance goal midway through the third period with his third of the year from Docking and Taylor.
The Cardinals carried much of the play, finishing the night with 43 shots on goal. Babson (3-8-0) took 28 shots. Plattsburgh was 0-for-5 on the power play while the penalty kill unit continued its stellar play killing the only penalty the Cardinals took on the night.
Mathieu Cadieux began the night between the pipes for Plattsburgh, turning away all 20 shots he faced through the first two periods. Josh Leis came on in relief for the third period recording eight saves. Testa made 38 stops for the Beavers.
With the win, the Cardinals advance to tomorrow's championship game where they will face Castleton State at 4 p.m. Utica and Babson will play in the consolation game set for 1 p.m.
