Testa, Ice Hockey Notch First Win, 6-4 Over Saint Anselm

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Junior PT Donato (Arlington, Mass.) and first-year Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) each scored twice and junior goalie Zeke Testa (Wellesley, Mass.) made 38 saves as the Babson College ice hockey team claimed its first victory of the 2011-12 season with a 6-4 triumph over visiting Saint Anselm College in an ECAC East matchup at the Babson Skating Center on Saturday night.

Babson (1-1-0 overall, 1-1-0 ECAC East) scored first when junior Jay Haseley (Rochester, N.Y.) took a pass from Bonazza on the right side of the slot and fired it past sophomore goalie Robert Kang (Glen Rock, N.J.) for a 1-0 Beaver lead at 6:50 of the opening period. Saint Anselm (1-1-0 overall, 1-1-0 ECAC East) then answered later in the same period, as junior  Mike Richard (Derry, N.H.) collected a cross-ice feed from classmate John Hyslip (Andover, Mass.) in the left circle and wristed it inside the near post at 15:39.

The Beavers broke the game open with a dominating second period, scoring three unanswered goals despite being outshot, 18-14. Donato scored the first two goals of the session, both coming on the powerplay. His first came at 2:20, as he took a pass from sophomore Shayne Anderson (Dorchester, Mass.) and sent a wrist shot from the high slot inside the left post for a 2-1 Babson advantage. Donato then made it 3-1 with another man-up goal at 16:25, taking a centering pass from junior Ryan Smith (Lynnfield, Mass.) on the left side and stuffing it home from close range for his second goal of the night. Bonazza later tacked on another goal with 44 seconds left in the period, converting feeds from Donato and sophomore Matt O'Neill (Norwell, Mass.) for his first collegiate goal at 19:16.

Babson struck again early in the third when junior Matt Leer (Edina, Minn.) scored unassisted off his own faceoff win in the left circle at 4:21. The Hawks answered when junior Tucker Mullin (Andover, Mass.) scored on his team's second 5-on-3 advantage of the night at 8:03, but Bonazza netted his second goal of the night when he tipped a Matt Furey (Quincy, Mass.) blast past Saint Anselm back-up goalie Nick Dries (Commerce Township, Mich.) at 14:57 to push the hosts' lead back to four at 6-2.

The Hawks made things interesting with a late flurry, as sophomore Joe Tabano (Clastonbury, Conn.) scored at 15:18 and sophomore Greg Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) added a 6-on-4 goal during an empty-net powerplay at 19:01. However, that would be all Testa would allow as Babson held on for the 6-4 victory.

Testa was sensational in the win for the Beavers, particularly in the decisive second period when he stopped all 18 shots that he faced. Eight of those came during a 2:44 stretch of overlapping powerplays for Saint Anselm, including three during the Hawks' 5-on-3 advantage from 10:18 to 11:34. The junior netminder also added a spectacular glove save on a clean breakaway by junior Timothy King (Weymouth, Mass.) with 4:50 left in the second, as he finished with 38 saves while allowing only two even-strength goals in the contest.

Kang played the first two periods and made 23 saves for the Hawks, while Dries finished up and made 10 stops in the third.
