Williams Downs Ice Hockey, 5-2

Box Score

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Williams College finished the first period with three unanswered goals to erase an early 1-0 deficit and defeat visiting Babson College, 5-2, in a non-conference ice hockey contest on Tuesday night. The Ephs moved to 2-0-1 with the victory, while the Beavers dropped to 2-3 with the loss.

Senior Cody Carlson gave Babson a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into the contest, converting assists from sophomores Shayne Anderson and Tom Callahan for his first score of the season at 5:50. However, the Ephs closed the period with three straight goals, as Matt Doyle scored at 9:22, Justin Troiani struck at 11:18, and John Wickman netted what would prove to be the game-winner with just one second left as the hosts took a 3-1 advantage after one.

Making his first collegiate start in net, Babson sophomore Danny Rivellini was outstanding in the second period, stopping all 16 shots that he faced in the period to keep the Beavers close. However, Williams netminder Sean Dougherty was equally good at the other end, turning away all 15 of the Beavers' attempts as it remained a two-goal game heading into the final period of play.

Williams put the contest out of reach with two more in the third, beginning with Cody Skinner's second of the year just 44 seconds in. Peter Mistretta later added his second of the season at the 12-minute mark to give the Ephs a 5-1 lead. Beavers' first-year Andrew Bonazza would add his third goal of the season off assists from junior Jay Haseley and sophomore Matt Furey at 17:44, but it would not be enough to prevent the 5-2 Williams victory.

Rivellini made 10 more stops in the third to finish with 31 saves in his Babson debut, while Dougherty made 28 stops in the winning effort for the Ephs.

The Beavers will return to action when they host the inaugural Cape Cod Lighthouse Invitational Tournament at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center this coming weekend. Saturday's semifinal round will feature Amherst College taking on Salem State University at 2 p.m. followed by Babson's game against Hobart College at 5 p.m. The consolation game will then take place on Sunday at noon, followed by the championship game at 3 p.m.
