NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- The Babson College men's ice hockey team
picked up a big point on the road against one of the nation's top
teams on Saturday, as the Beavers skated to a 4-4 overtime tie with
nationally-ranked Norwich. As a result of the deadlock, Babson
moved to 9-8-2 overall and 7-4-2 in the conference, while the
Cadets, ranked third in the nation in the most recent USCHO poll,
are now 12-5-2 overall and 10-1-2 in the ECAC East.
Babson led throughout much of the contest, beginning when junior
Mike Hoban scored his fifth goal of the season to
give his team a 1-0 lead at 10:25 of the first. First-year
Ben Kravitz then tallied his third of the campaigh
a minute and a half later to increase the Beavers' lead to 2-0.
Norwich got one goal back when Chad Anderson scored at 15:49 of
the opening session, but sophomore Ryan Smith
pushed the lead back to two when he netted his seventh of the
season at 15:44 of the second. Senior captain Jason
Schneider then added a powerplay strike at 4:10 of the
third - his fourth goal of the weekend and ninth of the year - to
give the Beavers a 4-1 advantage. The goal also represented
Schneider's second point of the game, making him just the 20th
player in the storied history of Babson hockey to reach the
100-point mark in his career.
The Cadets came storming back with a ferocious 70-second stretch
later in the third, as they rattled off three unanswered goals to
pull even at 4-4. Tory Allan scored the first at 7:28, Blake Forkey
potted the second at 8:20, and Igor Martinez tallied the equalizer
at 8:38. Babson also received a cross-checking penalty on the tying
goal.
With the momentum squarely in the corner of the hosts, the
Beavers dug in to keep the game even for the remainder of the
period. Babson started by killing off the penalty, as the Beavers'
defense held the Cadets without a shot on net during the two-minute
man-advantage. Norwich then recorded a 7-0 shot advantage over the
final 10 minutes of regulation, but sophomore goalie Zeke
Testa stopped all seven attempts to send the game into
overtime.
Both teams had chances in the extra session, but neither team
would score as the contest ended in a 4-4 tie. Testa would make
four more saves in overtime to give him 42 stops in the contest,
while Parker Carroll turned away two shots in OT to give him 18 in
the game.
