SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Babson College senior captain
Jason Schneider (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence
Academy) had a hat trick and two assists for a career-high
five points to lead the visiting Beavers to a 9-4 blowout win over
St. Michael's College in an ECAC East ice hockey matchup on Friday
night.
The Purple Knights stayed alive through two periods, trailing
3-2, but Babson put the game away with four unanswered goals in the
final period of play.
For the Beavers, Schneider scored two of his goals in the second
period, including the eventual game-winner, before completing the
hat trick in the third. Sophomore Matt Leer (Edina,
Minn./North Iowa Outlaws) added a pair of scores in the
victory - both of which came in the opening period, while classmate
Jay Haseley (Rochester, N.Y./Milton Academy) added
three assists.
For Saint Michael's, junior Reave MacKinnon (Winnipeg,
Manitoba/Winnipeg Saints) had a goal and an assist, and freshmen
Ryan MacDonald (Darien, Conn./Berkshire School) and Sam Torney
(Shelburne, Vt./Berkshire School) tallied their first collegiate
goals.
The Beavers took an early lead with Leer flicking in a rebound
past Saint Michael's sophomore goalie Mike Dizgun (Kirkland,
Quebec/OCN Blizzard), who had his head on a swivel but
couldn't find the loose puck. The Purple Knights answered
back in the 12th minute when MacKinnon flushed a wrister off of
senior Nick Sheehan's (Potsdam, N.Y./Cornwall Colts) rebound
for his team-best 12th goal of the year. Leer had one more in him
before the period ended, however, and beat Saint Michael's
junior Brady Earle (Columbia, Md./The Gunnery School) to the puck
just in time to score a sly goal and put Babson up 2-1 after one
period.
Senior Fran Briand (South Burlington, Vt./Loomis Chaffee School)
got the Purple Knights off on the right foot in the second period,
finishing a well-executed 2-on-1 breakaway with sophomore Michael
Jangro (Reading, Mass./Valley Warriors). Schneider and sophomore
Ryan Smith (Lynnfield, Mass./Boston Bulldogs) kept
the Babson lead alive with back-to-back goals just over a minute
apart. Saint Michael's would not go quietly, however, thanks
to MacDonald's devastating slapshot that split the defenders
and found its way past Babson junior goalie Andrew Peabody
(Marblehead, Mass./St. Paul's School) at the
15-minute mark.
The Beavers would then catch fire, rattling off five unanswered
goals in a span of 14 minutes. Schneider picked up goals two and
three, while fellow senior captain Terry Woods
(Duxbury, Mass./Andover Academy) netted his first goal of
the year during the decisive run.
Dizgun made 33 saves while facing the Babson assault, and
Peabody stopped 24-of-28 shots faced.
