BABSON PARK, Mass. – Nationally-ranked Tufts University
scored 12 unanswered goals to break the game open as the visiting
Jumbos defeated host Babson College, 15-4, in a non-conference
men's lacrosse contest at MacDowell Field on Monday
afternoon. With the win, Tufts, second in New England and ninth in
the nation, improved to 6-0 on the spring, while Babson suffered
its first defeat in four games to fall to 4-4 overall.
Juniors Ryan Molloy (Setauket, N.Y.) and D.J. Hessler (Monkton,
Md.) paced the Jumbos' offense, with Malloy tallying four
goals and three assists for a game-high seven points and Hessler
tossing in two goals and four goals for six points. Senior Mike
Droesch (Setauket, N.Y.) added a goal and 11 groundballs while
winning 10 of 15 face-offs for Tufts, and junior Bryan Petillo
(Holbrook, N.Y.) made six saves in three quarters in net to earn
the win.
Senior captain Mike Saucier (Nashua, N.H.)
played just under 47 minutes in net for Babson, finishing with 13
saves. Senior Shane Farrell (West Warwick, R.I.),
first-year Jamie Schmidt (Shelburne, Vt.), first-year Alex
Patinkin (Providence, R.I.), and first-year
Michael Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.) each scored goals
for the Beavers, while juniors Christian Ebert (Boxford,
Mass.) and Ryan Kucinski (Cohasset,
Mass.) recorded seven and five groundballs, respectively.
The Beavers played well early on, holding the Tufts'
offense to just three goals in the opening quarter while netting a
pair of their own. However, the Jumbos scored five unanswered goals
in each of the next two quarters and then netted two more to start
the fourth to build a commanding 15-2 advantage. Babson would net
the final two scores of the contest for the 15-4 final.
