BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott College sophomore Morgan DeShaw
(Danville, N.H.) scored her seventh goal of the game in
sudden-death overtime to help the Gulls defeat No. 8 Babson
College, 17-16, on Thursday night in Beverly, Mass. The Blue and
Green improve to 2-0 overall while handing the Beavers their first
loss of the season, dropping Babson to 2-1.
Endicott jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first 14 minutes
of action as DeShaw and Valerie Feldman (Albany, N.Y.) scored the
first two goals of the contest on free-position scores.
Endicott's Lauren Todd (Newfield, N.H.) netted her first
career goal on a feed from Feldman for the Gulls' third score
before Kellie Cunningham (Derry, N.H.) forced a turnover in the
Babson backfield, leading to a fast-break chance for Feldman and a
4-0 lead. Babson responded quickly, netting a pair of goals in an
11-second span on shots from Anna Collins (Winchester,
Mass.) and Taylor Kralovenec (Cos Cob,
Conn.) to make it a 4-2 game.
Feldman would score on another turnover in Babson's half
of the field before the Beavers' Kaitlyn Pettingill
(Hopkinton, Mass.) and Trisha Babson (Duxbury,
Mass.) scored back-to-back goals, making it a 5-4
ballgame. Morgan DeShaw netted her second goal of the game by
knifing through three defenders for a 6-4 lead but Pettengill would
score two straight goals to tie the game at six-all. Kellie
Cunningham found DeShaw to take the lead back and then Cunningham
found Feldman almost a minute later for another breakaway goal and
an 8-6 lead. However, the Beavers would add one more score from
Collins before the break to trail 8-7 at the half.
The teams traded goals at the beginning of the second period
before Babson's Collins scored back-to-back goals to knot the
game at 10. Following a Cunningham score, Babson took its first
lead of the game on consecutive scores from Pettengill and
Kralovenec, 12-11. Endicott would take back control of the game,
scoring three straight – including a pair of goals from
Feldman – to give EC a 14-12 lead with 9:03 to play in
regulation.
Pettengill and DeShaw traded goals before Babson's Collins
made it a one-goal game, 15-14, followed by Kralovenec tying the
game on a free-position score with 3:41 to play. Babson assumed
control and ran the clock down to under a minute when a foul near
the goal was called, leading to a free-position shot for Pettengill
with only :23 seconds left in regulation. Endicott's
Leah Neff (South Berwick, Maine) was up to the task as the
sophomore goalkeeper turned away Pettengill's attempt and the
Gulls held on to force overtime.
Endicott struck first in the extra period as Kellie Cunningham
scored on a free position bounce shot to take a 16-15 lead. After
the teams switched sides, Babson tied the game when Jamie
Spang (Kennebunk, Maine) found Collins in front of the net
to tie the score at 16-all. Valerie Feldman had a chance to win it
for the Gulls with :09 seconds showing but Sarah Macary
(Woodbury, Conn.) swatted Feldman's free position
attempt and forced sudden-death OT.
Off the draw control in sudden death, Feldman scooped up the
ground ball as Endicott set up its attack. Carin Czerniawski
(Monroe, Conn.) found DeShaw in front of the net and the sophomore
attacker fired a sidearm shot that flew under the crossbar and into
the back of the net to give the Gulls a 17-16 win only :25 seconds
into the final OT.
Morgan DeShaw led all scorers with her seven goals while Valerie
Feldman added six of her own with an assist and seven ground balls.
Kellie Cunningham netted a pair of goals and dished out three
assists with seven groundballs and four caused turnovers. Lauren
Todd and Kristen Micho (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored the other two goals
for Endicott while Czerniawski also grabbed seven ground balls.
Leah Neff picked up her second win of the season in net by making
eight saves on 32 shots faced.
Babson was led by Collins, who had a team-high six goals, three
assists and a game-high 11 groundballs. Pettengill also added five
goals while Kralovenec added three scores and Trisha Babson had two
of her own and six draw controls for the visitors. Ellen
McCurdy (Weston, Mass.) played well defensively, scooping
up eight groundballs and adding five draw controls and four caused
turnovers. Macary suffered the setback in net for the Beavers while
making 11 stops on 33 shots faced.
Endicott returns to action on March 17th when the Gulls travel
to Trinity College for a 5:00 p.m. faceoff. The Beavers look to
rebound when they head south to West Palm Beach, Fla. take on
number one-ranked Franklin & Marshall University on March 16th
at 7:00 p.m.
