BUZZARDS BAY, Mass.-- Senior E.J. Peterson
(Framingham, Mass.) notched four goals and an assist for
five points while sophomore Thomas Cykana (Minnetonka,
Minn.) added a hat trick and an assist to lead the Babson
men's lacrosse team to a 12-7 Pilgrim League victory over
Massachusetts Maritime in the conference opener for both schools
Thursday evening at Commander Ellis Field.
The visiting Beavers (2-6, 1-0 Pilgrim) jumped out to a 4-3 edge
after one quarter of action and converted eight face-off wins into
five goals in the second stanza en route to a 9-5 advantage at the
break. The host Buccaneers (3-3, 0-1 Pilgrim) got no closer than
four goals on two occasions over the final 30 minutes of play.
Babson won 15 of the 21 face-offs for the contest in overcoming 29
turnovers, with 13 of those draw wins coming in the first half
alone.
Senior Matt Enright (Bristol, R.I.) added a
goal and three assists in the win for the Beavers, who also
received a goal and an assist each from sophomores Andrew
Packer (Hudson, Ohio) and Armand Wilson
(Fairfield, Conn.). Senior Bryan Wilbur
(Hingham, Mass.) and freshman Cam Caruso (St.
Charles, Ill.) added single markers for the visitors, who
also received an assist off the stick of freshman Paul Grip
(Shrewsbury, Mass.).
Sophomore Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.) netted a hat trick in
the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a pair
of goals off the stick of junior Brian Burke (Del Mar,
Calif.). Senior Brendan Linn (Bourne, Mass.) and freshman
Kyle Lersch (Suffolk, Va.) added single tallies for the hosts, who
received assists from senior John Herman (Stamford, Conn.) and
sophomore Craig Nichols (Marshfield, Mass.).
Senior Max Owen (Hamilton, N.J.) made five
first half saves to pick up the win in goal for Babson, which also
received five second half stops from sophomore Mike Saucier
(Nashua, N.H.). Junior James Hitchings (Dover,
Mass.) made 15 saves in net for Massachusetts Maritime as the
Beavers outshot the Buccaneers by a 42-38 margin for the match.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts MIT in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League
contest on Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field beginning at
1:00 p.m., while Babson hosts Norwich in a Pilgrim Lacrosse league
match on Saturday afternoon in Babson Park, Mass. that also begins
at 1:00 p.m.
