CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A pair of fourth-quarter
goals helped propel MIT to a 4-3 victory over Babson College in a
Pilgrim Lacrosse League game on Saturday. With the win, the
Engineers improved to 5-5 on the year and 2-1 in conference play
while the Beavers' ledger dipped to 3-8 overall and 2-1 in Pilgrim
action.
Babson opened the scoring just over five minutes into the
contest when senior Bryan Wilbur (Hingham, Mass.)
connected on a feed from sophomore Armand Wilson
(Fairfield, Conn.). The Beavers then increased their
margin courtesy of an unassisted strike by senior Matt
Enright (Bristol, R.I.) with 1:14 remaining in the period.
MIT ended the shutout after 3:42 elapsed in the second stanza
with Neil Zimmerman setting up Ernie Park for his 13th
goal of the season. Babson countered with a solo effort by senior
E.J. Peterson (Framingham, Mass.) late in the quarter which
eventually resulted in a 3-1 lead at halftime.
The Engineers cut their deficit in half at the 9:25 mark of the
third quarter when Ryan Ballentine converted a pass from Corey
Garvey. The remainder of the period was a defensive battle,
maintaining the slim margin.
The Ballentine-Garvey connection returned three minutes into the
final frame, evening the score at three. Both sides had several
chances to record the go-ahead goal, but it was Park who found
Zimmerman for the game-winning strike with 45 seconds left in
regulation.
Garvey paced the Cardinal and Gray with six groundballs as Eric
Zuk added three of his own. In net, Garth Grove collected eight
saves.
Babson first-year Cam Caruso (St. Charles,
Ill.) led the Beavers with six groundballs, followed by
first-year Thomas Mallon (Manhasset, N.Y.) with five and senior
Matt Harrington with four. Senior goalkeeper Max Owen
(Hamilton, N.J.) posted eight saves during the first half
while sophomore Mike Saucier (Nashua, N.H.) closed
out the game with 10 stops.
Both squads continue conference play on Wednesday, April 15.
Babson will host Clark University for a 7pm game at MacDowell Field
while MIT will travel to Norwich University.
