BABSON PARK, Mass. - The 11th ranked Babson College women's
lacrosse team defeated Bates College 14-11 in a non-conference
contest Wednesday evening at MacDowell Field. The Beavers were led
by senior tri-captain Jackie Godfrey (Franklin,
Mass.) who tallied four goals and two assists. For Bates,
senior Caroline Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) had a game high six
goals. With the win, Babson improves to 4-2 overall and Bates is
now 4-3.
Babson came out strong scoring the first four goals of the game
in eight minutes of play. Bates the answered back with three
consecutive goals of their own making the score 4-3 in the favor of
the Beavers with 5:28 left to play in the first half. The two
teams then traded goals for the remainder of the period with Babson
taking the lead at halftime 7-5.
In the second half, Bates scored the first two goals of the
period in under three minutes of play to tie the game at 7-7.
Babson then scored the next four goals to bring the score to 11-7
with 11:15 left to play. The Bobcats were able to get within two
goals on two separate occasions including a 13-11 deficit with 23
seconds remaining. A goal at the buzzer by sophomore Alyssa
Hood (Newport, R.I.) resulted in the 14-11 Babson victory.
For the Beavers, six different players scored. Junior
Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass.) followed
Godfrey with four goals and one assist. Junior Anna Collins
(Winchester, Mass.) had three goals on the night and
Alyssa Hood, first-year Trisha Babson (Duxbury,
Mass.), and senior tri-captain Lindsay Bucci
(Medford, Mass.) each added one goal in the victory. The
Beavers defense was led by first-year Bridget McCurdy
(Weston, Mass.) with seven groundballs. Godfrey had a team
high three caused turnovers in the win. Trisha Babson won twelve
face-offs including a game high six individual draw controls.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Macary (Woodbury,
Conn.) played all 60 minutes in goal and made 11 saves and
had four groundballs.
Thomas led the Bobcats with six goals and one assist. First-year
Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) finished with two goals and one assist
in the loss. Junior Molly Radis (Peaks Island, Maine), first-year
Caroline Pierce (Weston, Mass.) and sophomore Abby Saucier
(Yarmouth, Maine) each added one goal for the Bobcats. Dannis also
added a team high six groundballs. Sophomore goalkeeper Mara
Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) played the entire game in net for Bates
making 11 saves and adding three groundballs.
The Beavers return home this Saturday when they open up their
New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schedule
against Smith College for a 1pm game. Bates will host Amherst on
Saturday at 12pm.
