NEW LONDON, Conn.--Steve Dachille (Garden City, N.Y.) exploded
with six of his eight goals in the first half of play as
Connecticut College (3-4) put an end to its three-game slide with a
22-5 victory against Babson College (1-6) in New London Wednesday.
Dachille matched a single-game scoring record that was set by
Parker Sides '00 in March of 1998. The junior quad-captain
buried his 70th collegiate score in the second half of play.
Ryan Hayes (Darien, Conn.) racked up six points for the hosts
with three goals and three assists in the triumph. Junior Sean
Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) netted two goals and assisted on three
others in a five-point day. Eric Doran (Pennington, N.J.) had
a productive afternoon, assisting on three of Dachille's goals in
the first half.
Mark Mangano (Basking Ridge, N.J.) chipped in with a pair of
first-half tallies for the Camels, who held a 46-to-30 advantage in
shots. Chuck Czerkawski (Cohasset, Mass.) collected a game-high 11
groundballs and was victorious on 11-of-16 face-offs.
Babson College senior E.J. Peterson (Framingham,
Mass.) scored his team-leading 18th goal of the season in
the setback. Senior Matt Enright (Bristol,
R.I.) corralled five ground balls to go with a goal for
the Beavers.
Dachille netted two quick goals in the opening 2:25 of
regulation. Driscoll and Mangano accounted for the next two scores
and the Camels had a 4-0 lead. Babson got on the board at the 5:32
mark. Peterson made a nifty little wrap around move from behind the
cage for the score to make it a 4-1 contest.
Doran's open field vision and smart decision making led to the
fifth goal. Babson was trying to induce a turnover with a double
team but Doran was able to break the defensive trap with a feed to
Dachille for his third goal of the quarter and the Camels carried a
5-1 lead after one.
The Camels scored the first four goals of the second quarter to
break the game wide open. Doran assisted Dachille for a score at
the 13:13 mark. With 10:08 remaining, the Camels were able to break
a Babson clearing attempt with a strong ride. Dachille made an
on-ball check for the ball and Ryan Hayes (Darien, Conn.) was able
to come away with the ground ball. He snapped off a pass to Brendan
Moses (Medfield, Mass.) who found the back of the net to make it a
7-1 contest. Hayes followed with the next goal before Dachille
extended the lead to 9-1 by capping the rally with his fifth goal
at the 7:16 mark.
The Camels scored two of the next three goals to take an 11-2
lead into the break. Connecticut College opened the second half
with seven unanswered markers to extend their advantage to 18-2.
Dachille tied the school record with 6:18 left in the quarter. It
was more than enough as the Camels continued to pull away in the
22-5 win.
Mike Saucier (Nashua, N.H.) made three saves in
the start for the Beavers. Senior Max Owen (Hamilton,
N.J.) stopped seven shots in 50:50 of action for Babson.
Junior net-minder Mark Moran (Greenwich, Conn.) had five saves
in the first half action for Connecticut College. Rob Moccia
(Malvern, Pa.) made one save in the third quarter of action. John
Lenehan (Hingham, Mass.) contributed with four saves in the first
half of the fourth quarter and Neil Scott (Paoli, Pa.) closed out
the contest by making one stop.
