BOSTON, Mass. -- Junior defenseman Gentry Zollars (Pittsburgh,
PA) took a shot from the top of the left circle that squirted just
over the goal line with 1:34 left in overtime to give the
University of Massachusetts Boston men's ice hockey team a 5-4
victory over visiting Babson College tonight in an Eastern College
Athletic Conference East contest at the Clark Athletic Center rink
on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 4-2-1
overall and 2-2-1 in ECAC East play, while the Beavers fall to
4-3-1 and 3-2-0.
The game was a rematch of the ECAC East Championship, where
Babson came away with a 4-3 win in overtime in Henniker, NH on
March 7, 2009.
Junior forward Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) won the faceoff for
UMass Boston in the Beavers' zone, where senior forward Kris
Kranzky (Glendora, CA) found Zollars for his first goal of the
campaign and the first game-winner of his career.
Babson netted a pair of goals in the third period, the second of
which was scored by sophomore forward Sean Roche (Franklin,
MA) on a feed from senior blueliner Liam
Chatterton (Staten Island, NY) at the 13:32 mark of the
period to knot the score at 4-4 and send the game into overtime.
The Beacons broke into the scoring column first when Tufman and
Kranzky combined to set up junior Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) at 8:43
of the opening period for a 1-0 lead. Atsoff struck again in
the second period with the same combination at the 5:23 mark for
his fifth goal of the campaign and a 2-0 UMass Boston lead, before
junior forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) made it 3-0 in
the Beacons' favor just 1:17 later with his third goal of the
season on a helper from Zollars and sophomore forward Chris Wyman
(Bartlett, IL) at 6:40 of the middle period.
Sophomore forward Cody Carlson (Peterborough,
NH) put the Beavers on the board with his third goal of
the year on an assist from senior forward Chris Wood
(Medford, MA) and junior forward Terry Woods
(Duxbury, MA) at 11:41 of the second stanza to cut the
deficit to 3-1, but UMass Boston responded on the power play with
the third tally of the year from Kranzky, courtesy of junior
defenseman Brett Calhoun (Tulsa, OK) and Atsoff just 52 seconds
later for a 4-1 lead. Freshman forward PT Donato
(Arlington, MA) cut the margin in half for Babson on a
feed from junior forward Jeff Sullivan (Quincy,
MA) with 4:30 to go in the second period.
Donato netted his second goal of the night and fourth of the
season on the power play with 8:21 gone in the third period, thanks
to a helper from Carlson and senior forward Shane Farrell
(West Warwick, RI) to pull the visitors to within 4-3.
Senior goalie Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY) earned the victory with
35 saves for the Beacons, while freshman Zeke Testa
(Wellesley, MA) was very good in defeat, stopping 23 of 25
shots in the final 36:46 of action after entering his first
collegiate contest in the middle of the second period.
Sophomore goaltender Andrew Peabody (Marblehead,
MA) got the starting nod for the Beavers and turned away
10 of 13 shots in the first 26:40 of the contest.
Babson will be in action again on Saturday, January 2 when it
travels to Middlebury, VT to take on Middlebury College in the
Middlebury Holiday Classic at 4:00 p.m.
