Women's Lax Pounds Mount Holyoke, 15-5

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Paced by senior midfielder Anita Martgnetti (Winchester, Mass./Winchester), the Babson College women's lacrosse team earned a 15-5 victory over Mount Holyoke College this afternoon in NEWMAC action at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. Martignetti totaled five points on four goals and one assist.

With the win, the Beavers put the finishing touches on an undefeated regular season in conference play. They will enter the NEWMAC Tournament as the top seed after capturing the league's regular season title for the second year in a row.

Nine players posted points and eight scored goals for Babson, which outshot the Lyons 45-17. Sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) matched Martgnetti with four goals, while junior attacker Jackie Godfrey (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) added two goals and a helper. The Beavers also received a boost from sophomore midfielder Anna Collins (Winchester, Mass./Winchester), who recorded one goal and a pair of assists.

Leading the way for Mount Holyoke was sophomore Peggy Wefald (Granger, Ind./Penn), who tallied a hat trick. Junior midfielder Ava Gottschall (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) found the net twice and first year attacker Clara Raugei (Alpharetta, Ga./Wesleyan) chipped in with an assist.

Neither team led by more than two goals in a first half that saw three ties. Pettengill tallied twice in the first 2:12 to give Babson an early 2-0 edge. Mount Holyoke broke through for its first goal at the 23:56 mark, when Gottschall scored off a feed from Raugei. Wefald netted her first goal of the contest 43 second later to knot things up at 2-2.

The game went back and forth over the next 18 minutes with the teams exchanging goals. With 4:20 remaining in the opening frame, both squads had four goals. Babson gained control of the game with two tallies in the `final 2:10 of the first half. The Beavers took a 6-4 advantage into the break.

In the second stanza, it was all Babson. The guests enjoyed a 7-5 lead at the 26:13 and outscored Mount Holyoke 8-0 down the stretch to seal things. Martgnetti and Pettengill registered two goals apiece to fuel the run.

First year goalkeeper Sarah Macary (Woodbury, Conn./Gunnery) stopped eight shots en route to her 13th win of the season for the Beavers. Her counterpart, sophomore Mimi Henry (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) tuned in brilliant effort for the Lyons, making a career high 20 saves in a losing effort.

Both clubs will compete in the NEWMAC Tournament next week. Mount Holyoke (2-12, 0-6 NEWMAC) will travel to Springfield College for a quarterfinal round contest on Wednesday. Babson (13-2, 6-0 NEWMAC) has earned a first round bye and will host a semifinal round game on Saturday.
