MEDFORD, Mass. -
The Tufts University women's lacrosse team, ranked 17th nationally, got five goals from first-year Amanda Roberts (Wenham, MA) and four each from junior Courtney Thomas (Needham, MA) and sophomore Jenna Abelli (Framingham, MA) as the Jumbos earned a 14-9 victory over-10th ranked Babson College on Thursday at Bello Field.
The Jumbos led the entire game, though Babson was within a goal or two on a few occasions. The victory is the fifth straight for Tufts, who improve to 8-3 overall. Babson lost for the first time in six games, falling to 11-2 overall.
Tufts jumped out to a 6-1 lead, with Abelli and Roberts each scoring twice. Babson bounced back and was within 7-5 when junior Lindsay Bucci (Medford, MA) scored with a minute remaining until halftime. That capped a 4-1 run for the Beavers, but Roberts scored her third goal of the first half with 47 seconds remaining to put Tufts up 8-5 at intermission.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, MA) scored the first two goals of the second half and the Beavers were within one at 8-7. Tufts answered by scoring the next three goals, including a goal and an assist by Roberts, to lead 11-7 at 21:45 of the second half.
Bucci scored the next two goals for Babson, giving her four for the game, and the visitors were down just 11-9. However, that would be all for the Beaver offense, as Tufts tallied the final three goals of the game, two of which were assisted by senior Sarah Williams (Bethesda, MD).
Roberts added two assists to her five goals for a seven-point game. Jumbo first-year goalie Sara Bloom (Summit, NJ) had nine of her 13 saves in the first half.
Babson first-year goalie Sarah Macary (Woodbury, CT) stopped 15 shots, while Anna Collins (Winchester, MA) and Pettengill both scored twice.
