April 1, 2008

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. - Despite missing two of its starters, the Babson women's lacrosse team posted another impressive win over a conference foe on Tuesday, as the nationally-ranked Beavers defeated host Wheaton College, 17-4, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Keefe Field.

The Lyons suffered their third straight loss to fall to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Beavers, ranked 11th in today's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, improve to 8-1 while remaining unbeaten in the NEWMAC at 2-0.

Playing without junior defender Kate Nichols (Andover, Mass.) and junior attack Lindsay Bucci (Medford, Mass.), Babson still managed to explod out of the gate with score nine unanswered goals during a 16:42 span. Sophomore Anna Collins (Winchester, MA/Winchester) played a hand in five of the tallies, scoring three times while assisting two others. Wheaton responded with three successive scores in just under two minutes, with junior Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) figuring in on two of them. Junior Jess Parker (Cataumet, MA/Cushing Academy) dumped in a shot with 21.3 ticks left in the opening half and gave the Beavers a 10-3 advantage at the break.

The hosts narrowed their deficit to six for the second time on a goal by senior Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) 32 seconds into the second frame, but Wheaton didn't score again, as Babson rattled off the game's final seven tallies to secure the double-digit win. Collins found the back of the net twice during the 7-0 run, as did senior Melissa Martin (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy).

Dimick paced the Lyons with a pair of goals, Thornton finished with a tally and an assist, while senior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) scored once. Freshman goalkeeper Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) made 13 saves between the pipes.

Collins was the offensive star for the Beavers with five goals and two assists. Senior Anita Martignetti (Winchester, MA/Winchester) totaled two tallies and three helpers, sophomore Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) had a hat trick, and Martin and Parker finished with two goals apiece. Junior Jackie Godfrey (Franklin, MA/Franklin) added a goal and three assists. First-year goalie Sarah Macary (Woodbury, CT/The Gunnery) was impressive in net with 11 stops.
