LEWISTON, Maine - Sophomores Anna Collins and Kaitlyn Pettengill each scored four goals to lead the Babson College women's lacrosse team to a 15-11 victory over host Bates College in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers, ranked 12th in the nation by the IWLCA, improved to 2-0 on the year.
For the second straight game, rookie goalie Sarah Macary was outstanding in net for Babson, as she finished with 15 saves. She was aided on defense by solid efforts from senior tri-captain Bethany Nardone, senior tri-captain Brianne Carlson, and sophomore Marissa Monaco. Offensivly, the Beavers received four goals each from Collins and Pettengill and three more from junior Lindsay Bucci. Senior tri-captain Anita Martignetti chipped in with two goals, while junior Jackie Godfrey and sophomore Nicole Dagesse rounded out Babson's scoring with a goal apiece.
Caroline Thomas scored four goals for the second straight game and added one assist for Bates. Molly Radis scored three goals and Morgan Maciewicz added two goals and two assists. Bates held a 41-34 edge in shots taken, but Babson managed a 28-18 advantage in ground balls.
Maciewicz started the scoring with an unassisted goal, but Babson came back with consectuvie goals by Pettengill and Dagesse. Thomas knotted the game back at 2-2, but Babson answered with a 3-0 run in under three minutes on goals by Pettengill, Bucci and Jackie Godfrey for a 5-2 Babson lead in the eighth minute.
Thomas answered with a free-position goal and made it a hat trick in the 19th minute on a Maciewicz assist, and Radis closed the gap to 6-5 in the 21st minute. Collins and Bucci sandwiched goals around Radis's second tally to give Babson an 8-6 lead at halftime.
Radis opened the second half with an unassisted goal, and Maciewicz tied the game at 8-8 in the 34th minute from a Molly Wagner assist. Collins scored two straight goals for Babson, however, making it 10-8 Babson. After first-year Briana Gross found the net for Bates to make it 10-9 with 20:20 left, Babson scored three straight crucial goals, two by Martignetti and another by Pettengill, and the Beavers led it 13-9 with 13 minutes to play.
Thomas and Gross each added one more goal apiece for Bates to make it 14-11, but Bucci finished the scoring with 5:44 left to play and the Beavers played keepaway for much of the game's remainder.
