Men's Lacrosse Notches First Victory With Easy 14-8 Win Over MMA

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Senior co-captain Jason Wellemeyer (Pembroke, Mass.) scored four goals and assisted two others as the Babson College men's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the year in its Pilgrim League opener against Massachusetts Maritime, 14-8, at MacDowell Field on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers are now 1-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Buccaneers dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.

First-year Andrew Packer (Hudson, Ohio) joined Wellemeyer with four goals in the win for Babson, while junior co-captain Bryan Wilbur (Hingham, Mass.) and junior E.J. Peterson (Framingham, Mass.) each added a pair of scores. Wilbur also dished out one assist, and first-year Mike Lydon (Norfolk, Mass.) and junior Matt Enright (Bristol, R.I.) contributed one goal and two assists apiece. First-year Mike Saucier (Nashua, N.H.), sophomore Max Owen (Hamilton, N.J.), and sophomore Chris Jacobs (Pittsford, N.Y.) split time in net for the Beavers, combining for eight saves.

Seven different players scored goals for Mass Maritime, led by senior Bryan Sears (Scituate, Mass.), who finished with two scores. First-year Taylor Sears (Scituate, Mass.) and junior Matt Sullivan (Marshfield, Mass.) each added one goal and one assist, and sophomore James Hitchings (Dover, Mass.) and junior Alex Deveaux (Northborough, Mass.) combined for 10 saves in net.

Babson dominated the first half, rattling off 10 straight goals before MMA scored on a man advantage just before the half. Wellemeyer and Peterson each scored twice as Babson took a 5-0 lead after one quarter of play, and Packer struck for two more in the second to help the Beavers build a 10-1 advantage a the break. Wellesley then assisted both Wilbur and Packer on the only two goals of the third quarter, as Babson led 12-1 after three on its way to the 14-8 final.

The Beavers outshot the Buccaneers, 44-20, in the contest, including a 40-17 margin through the first three quarters. Babson also posted a 45-36 advantage in ground balls while winning 18 of 25 face-offs.
