BABSON PARK, Mass. - UMass-Boston scored four unanswered goals -
three of which came in the decisive third period - to erase an
early 2-0 deficit en route to a 4-2 victory over host Babson
College in an ECAC East men's ice hockey contest at the Babson
Skating Center on Wednesday night. With the win, the Beacons
improved to 5-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference, while the
Beavers fell to 3-3-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the ECAC East.
Babson jumped all over the visitors in the early going, scoring
twice in the first period to take a 2-0 lead after one. First-year
Mike Hoban (Medfield, Mass.) scored the first when
he squeezed his own rebound inside the right post at 13:27, and
senior Alex DiPietro (Winthrop, Mass.) netted the
second when his slap shot from the right point glanced off
UMass-Boston junior goalie Ryan Donovan (Rexford, N.Y.) and
trickled over the goal line at 18:17.
The Beacons began their comeback early in the second, as
first-year Kyle Tejchma (Fruitport, Mich.) one-timed a centering
pass from classmate Wayne Sands (Chalfant, Pa.) past Beavers'
rookie goalie Andrew Peabody (Marblehead, Mass.)
at 3:08. UMB would then have a prime opportunity to tie the contest
when Babson was whistled for a five-minute major later in the
period, but the Beavers successfully killed the penalty to take a
2-1 edge into the second intermission.
UMass-Boston exploded out of the gate in the third period,
scoring twice in the first five minutes to grab its first lead of
the contest. First-year Bryan Albert (Redlands, Calif.) tied the
game at 2-2 when he found the lower right corner with a wrister
from the slot at 1:35, and sophomore Eric Tufman (Abington, Pa.)
put the Beacons in front when he tucked a rebound of first-year
Brian Marks' (Brownville, N.Y.) shot inside the right post at 4:14.
Babson would have numerous scoring chances over the next 15
minutes, but a botched 2-on-0 break and several brilliant saves by
Donovan kept the Beavers off the board. UMass-Boston eventually put
the contest out of reach when junior Kris Kranzky (Glendora,
Calif.) potted an empty-net goal with 42.2 seconds left, resulting
in the 4-2 final.
Donovan was magnificent in the win for the Beacons, finishing
with 33 saves in net, including 22 straight after surrendering the
two first-period goals. Peabody played 58:27 in goal for Babson,
making a total of 23 saves.
