BABSON PARK, Mass. -
The Babson College women's lacrosse team outscored visiting Eastern Connecticut State University, 10-2, in the second half to claim a 16-8 victory over the Warriors in a non-conference contest at MacDowell Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Beavers, who earlier in the day moved to up seventh in the IWLCA national rankings, improved to 13-2 with their 10th straight win - the second longest streak in school history. Meanwhile, the Warriors suffered just their fifth loss of the spring, as they fell to 10-5 overall.
Sophomore Lindsay Bucci (Medford, Mass.) led all players with six goals for Babson, while first-year Anna Collins (Winchester, Mass.) turned in a fantastic effort with four goals, one assist, three groundballs, and two draw controls. Junior Anita Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.) chipped in with three goals, one assist, and five draws, and first-year Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass.) continued her magnificent rookie campaign with three goals. Sophomore Jess Parker (Cataumet, Mass.) added an assist and three groundballs for the Beavers, while senior goalie Jennie Williams (Andover, Mass.) made five saves in net.
Despite taking the loss, senior goalie Erin Calkins (Stony Brook, N.Y.) turned in a terrific performance in net for Eastern Connecticut State, as she stopped 15 shots in 60 minutes. Offensively, the Warriors were paced by junior Lily Anderson (Portland, Maine), who recorded three goals and three draw controls, and senior tri-captain Kara Bradley (North Haven, Conn.), who added two goals, two groundballs, and two draws.
Babson jumped out to an early 3-0 lead behind two early scores from Bucci, but Eastern answered with four straight goals, including two by Anderson, to pull ahead, 4-3, with 13 minutes left in the first half. Bucci then netted two more goals to fuel a 3-0 run that gave the Beavers a 7-4 cushion, but senior tri-captain Jenna Faiola (Billerica, Mass.) and Anderson each scored in the final two minutes of the half to tie the contest up, 6-6, heading into the break.
After the two squads traded goals in the opening five minutes of the second half, Babson put the game away with an 8-0 run over the next 22 minutes. Collins scored all four of her goals during that stretch, while Martignetti and Pettengill tossed in two scores each. That gave the Beavers a 15-7 advantage that would eventually lead to the 16-8 victory.
