BABSON PARK, Mass. -
Junior tri-captain Richie Rasamny (Redding, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal with 2:21 remaining in the first overtime period to lift the visiting Wheaton College Lyons to a dramatic 7-6 victory over the host Babson College Beavers in a Pilgrim League men's lacrosse matchup at MacDowell Field on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Wheaton (3-6 overall, 3-0 Pilgrim League) remained perfect in conference play, while Babson (5-4 overall, 3-1 Pilgrim League) suffered its first conference loss.
Wheaton grabbed a quick 1-0 lead when Rasamny assisted senior Markus Ricci (Wayland, Mass.) on a man-up goal less than five minutes into the game, but Babson responded with three straight goals to end the first and another to start the second to build a 4-1 advantage. Sophomore Matt Harrington (Hanover, Mass.) scored on each end of the 4-0 run, while first-year Luke Biggins (Sudbury, Mass.) and junior captain Jason Wellemeyer (Pembroke, Mass.) also netted goals.
The Lyons got two goals back in the final four minutes of the first half, as senior tri-captain Trey Helms (Cockeysville, Md.) struck at 3:31 and Ricci netted his second of the day at 2:17. Babson then pushed its lead to 5-3 with a goal by sophomore R.J. Moulton (Manhassett, N.Y.) with 13:33 left in the third, but Wheaton ripped off a 3-0 run to close the period with a 6-5 lead. Helms tallied his second with 12 minutes left, sophomore Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, Mass.) tied it at 10:20, and first-year Tim Horan (Cheshire, Conn.) put the Lyons in front at 3:37.
Babson evened the game at 6-6 with 8:22 left in the fourth, as sophomore Bryan Wilbur (Hingham, Mass.) converted Harrington's second assist and fourth point of the afternoon. That set the stage for Rasamny, who scored an unassisted goal with 2:21 remaining in the first overtime period to clinch the 7-6 victory for the Lyons.
In addition to the game-winner, Rasamny also recorded two assists in the win for Wheaton, giving him three points on the day. First-year Alex Lewis (Westfield, N.J.) finished with 11 saves in net for the Lyons, including five in the opening quarter, while Gomer and senior tri-captain Chris Hade (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) each picked up a team-high three groundballs.
Senior Nick Fessenden (Auburndale, Mass.) joined Harrington with two assists for Babson, while Biggins and first-year Shane Farrell (West Warwick, R.I.) each recorded a game-high five groundballs. Sophomore Max Owen (Hamilton, N.J.) went the distance in net for the Beavers, stopping 12 shots. It was the second straight overtime affair for Babson, which defeated conference foe Lasell, 5-4, in OT on Saturday.
