Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Sophomore Alex Farmer (Madison, Conn.) made 11 saves in net to help the visiting Colby College men's lacrosse team win a hard-fought defensive battle with host Babson College, 7-5, at MacDowell Field on Wednesday night. With the win, the White Mules improved to 1-1 on the year, while the Beavers slipped to 1-2.

Colby held a 2-0 lead after the first quarter of play, as seniors Dan Schupack (Chechire, Conn.) and Ryan Scott (Columbia, N.J.) each netted goals in the opening session. Junior Drew Piekarski (East Sandwich, Mass.) then made it 3-0 when he scored with 11:23 left in the second before Babson got one back on a goal by first-year Luke Biggins (Sudbury, Mass.) with 1:09 remaining in the half.

The two teams traded goals in the first two minutes of the third quarter, as Biggins netted his second at 14:41 and first-year Whit McCarthy (Darien, Conn.) answered for Colby at 13:36. Junior Jason Wellemeyer (Pembroke, Mass.) then pulled Babson back to within one, 4-3, when he scored with 12:55 remaining.

Sophomore Caddy Brooks (Darien, Conn.) scored off a loose ball in front to push Colby's advantage back to two with 7:48 left in the third, and Scott tacked on another score after a brilliant spin-move in front of the net at the six-minute mark. The White Mules held that 6-3 edge until midway through the fourth, when Biggins netted his third of the game with 6:09 left in regulation. Schupack responded with his second of the contest at 3:29 to give Colby a 7-4 lead, and Babson managed just one more goal - Wellemeyer's second with 13 seconds remaining - as the visitors came away with the 7-5 win.

Farmer went the distance in net for Colby, finishing with 11 saves, while sophomore Max Owen (Hamilton, N.J.) finished a strong effort in goal with 12 stops for Babson.
