BOSTON — Junior
Lillian McAughan (Bellevue, Wash.) tallied a goal and an assist for a career-high three points, and a strong defense registered its second straight shutout as Babson College defeated the University of Massachusetts Boston, 2-0, in non-conference women's soccer action Tuesday evening at James-Cotter Field.
Babson won its second game in a row and improved its record to 3-4 overall while UMB had a two-game unbeaten streak snapped and fell to 2-4-2 on the season.
Sophomore
Izzy Lee (Phoenix, Ariz.) also scored for the Beavers, and senior
Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) made two saves in goal, both from long distance, for her second shutout in a row. The Beaver defense limited the Beacons to just five total shots and two on target.
Sophomore Janiya Morales Matier (North Easton, Mass.) had an impressive night in the Beacons' goal, finishing with nine saves.
McAughan gave the Beavers an early lead with her first goal of the season in the 12th minute. She got past two defenders inside the right side of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot from 10 yards out inside the upper near post for a 1-0 lead.
Morales Matier denied Lee of a goal on a shot from 15 yards out in the 28th minute with a diving save to her left. Senior
Caroline Sutherland (Millville, Mass.) nearly put one in for the Beavers with five minutes to go in the half but her header from five yards out went over the top of the goal.
The Beacons' best shot by of the evening came from senior Alexis Williamson (Nassau, Bahamas) in the 43rd minute, a long range shot from the right side, and Cottone was able to catch it without a problem.
Babson doubled its lead in the 59th minute when McAughan sent a cross from the right side, which was deflected by Morales Matier, but Lee pounced on the loose ball and buried it into the open net for her second goal in as many games.
The Green and White continued to control play in the final 30 minutes but was unable to add to their lead. Their best chance came in the 88th minute when senior
Olga Metelkine (Marlboro, N.J.) worked a nice give-and-go with sophomore
Emily Bacon (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) before getting a good shot on goal, but she was denied by Morales Matier.
The Beavers finished with a 20-5 advantage in shots, including 11-2 in shots on goal, and produced a 9-4 margin in corner kicks.
Babson returns to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Friday with a visit to Coast Guard for a 7:00 p.m. contest in New London, Conn. UMass Boston resumes Little East Conference play Saturday at Keene State at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• Babson has won the last eight matches against the Beacons and is 8-0-1 all-time against UMB in a series that dates back to 2014. The Beavers have conceded just one goal in the nine contests between the teams.
• The Beavers recorded their second straight whitewash for the first time since blanking Mount Holyoke and Salve Regina last October 11 and 15.
• McAughan notched her first goal since scoring the only goal in a 3-1 loss to Wheaton in the NEWMAC Tournament last November.
• Lee's two goals in the last two games match her total from last season, when she was the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year and All-Conference second team.
