BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior
Jack Dunaisky (Longmeadow, Mass.) drove in the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to lift visiting Springfield College to a 2-1 win over Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Govoni Field.
Babson, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, dips to 20-15 overall and 8-6 in conference play with the loss. Springfield, which also defeated the Beavers 6-5 last Tuesday, improved to 22-13 overall and also is 8-6 in the NEWMAC.
Graduate student
Ryan Grace (Concord, Mass.) was 3-for-3 with a walk, senior
Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) singled twice and scored a run, and sophomore
Graydon Vyse (Glastonbury, Conn.) struck out five and allowed just one unearned run on two hits over 8.0 innings for the Green and White.
Junior Jack Richburg (Hinesburg, Vt.) also was superb for the Pride, striking and giving up just five hits over 7.0 shutout innings. First-year Jake Gombotz (South Windsor, Conn.) gave up an unearned run while allowing two hits and two walks over 2.0 innings to improve to 2-2 with the win.
Both pitchers dominated over the first five innings as neither team advanced a runner past second. Springfield drew first blood in the top of the sixth though as junior Tyler Casey (Wallingford, Conn.) got drilled with a 3-0 pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a failed pickoff before scoring on a double play to make it -1-0.
Richburg retired eight straight through the middle innings and Vyse set down the final eight batters he faced before the Beavers pulled even in the bottom of the eighth. Teator led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a ground ball and then raced home when Pride catcher Dan Surette's (Braintree, Mass.) throw ended up in left field after trying to catch him leading off third with a runner stealing second.
Gombotz got a ground out to second after loading the bases with a pair of walks to escape further damage, and Springfield put together a two-out rally in the top of the ninth off Babson sophomore
Dillon James (Attleboro, Mass.). Junior Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.) reached on an infield single, classmate Adam Crocker (Windsor, Nova Scotia) worked an eight-pitch walk to keep the inning alive and Dunaisky lined a single down the left field line to bring home Garafalo with the go-ahead run.
Teator reached with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth but Gombotz got a line drive to third to end the game.
The Beavers conclude the regular season with a doubleheader against WPI in Worcester beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday, while Springfield travels to Johnson & Wales on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
