Softball Swept by Coast Guard

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Dana Walker (Macon, Ga.) twirled a three-hit shutout in the opener and allowed just one run over 12 innings over two games to help the visiting Coast Guard Academy sweep Babson College in Saturday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWAMC) softball doubleheader at Alumni Field.

The Beavers dropped the opener 4-0 and suffered a 5-1 defeat the Bears in game two. Babson, which has dropped four of its last five games, slips to 13-18 overall and 5-7 in conference play, while Coast Guard improves to 14-10 overall and 8-4 in the NEWMAC.

Game 1: Coast Guard 4, Babson 0
Junior Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) doubled and classmate Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) and sophomore Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) both singled for the Beavers. First-year Anna Topel (Oak Park, Ill.) went the distance in the circle allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out two and walking five to drop to 4-5 on the year.

Walker struck out three and walked just one while recording her third shutout of the season to improve to 9-6 for the Bears, who went in front 1-0 on Hayden Reilly's (Prosper, Texas) home run to right with one out in the top of the first inning.

Both pitchers were in control for much of the afternoon despite the defenses combining for seven errors. Topel did not give up a hit following the home run until the sixth and Walker didn't allow a Babson runner to advance past second in the game. Zoey Lynn (Nokomis, Fla.) came through with a two-out RBI single to center to give Coast Guard a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth, and the Beavers committed a pair of errors in the frame that allowed the visitors to push across two more runs.

Game 2: Coast Guard 5, Babson 1
First-year Charly Landow (Wayne, Pa.) went 3-for-3 with a run scored and Walsh was 2-for-4 with an RBI double to pace Babson's eight-hit attack. DiCampello also singled and walked twice for the Beavers, who left 11 runners on base in the loss.

Mack Murnane (Castle Hayne, N.C.) went 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored, while Abriana Schmutz (Marysville, Ohio) singled twice, drew a pair of walks and scored a run to lead the Bears. Walker, who entered the game with two on and nobody out in the bottom of the third, gave up one run on four hits while striking out four over 5.0 innings to improve to 10-6 with the victory.

Beavers' junior Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) stranded a pair of runners in the first and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second before Murnane put the visitors up 1-0 with a solo homer to lead off the top of the fourth. The Green and White answered back in the bottom half of the inning though, as Landow got things started with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch before coming around to tie the game on Walsh's double to center.

Coast Guard went in front for good in the sixth as Murnane led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch, while Reilly came through with a two-out RBI single to right to make it 3-1. Babson left runners on the corners in the bottom of the inning and the Bears tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh, including an RBI double to left center by Murnane, for a four-run lead.

Babson will host Endicott for a single game on Thursday at 4 p.m., while Coast Guard is set for a doubleheader against Emerson on Monday at 3 p.m.
