Baseball Splits Saturday's Doubleheader with Emerson

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Jason Finkelstein (Walpole, Mass.) allowed just one run over seven innings in game one to help Babson College earn a split of Saturday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWAMC) baseball doubleheader with Emerson College at Govoni Field.

The Beavers won the opener 11-1 in eight innings before dropping game two to the Lions, 7-6. Babson has won five of its last six games and is now 16-12 overall and 6-4 in conference play, while Emerson improved to 6-19 overall and 2-10 in the NEWMAC.

Game 1: Babson 11, Emerson 1 (8 inn.)
Sophomore Ben Valente (Newton, Mass.) finished with three hits, graduate student Ryan Grace (Concord, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a homer, a double, three RBI and turns scored, and junior Jack Moses (Belle Mead, N.J.) singled twice and knocked in three runs to lead the Beavers. Junior Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) and sophomore Dylan Drazka (Rye Brook, N.Y.) also recorded two hits apiece in support of Finkelstein, who improved to 2-2 by allowing just one run on two hits to go along with five strikeouts over seven innings.

Justin Fields (Glen Ridge, N.J.) singled, walked and scored a run, while Liam Wagner (Hingham, Mass.) added an RBI single for the Lions. Tyler Metcalf (Louisville, Ky.) dropped to 1-6 on the year with the loss after giving up four earned runs on five hits over 5.1 innings.

Drazka scored on a passed ball after reaching on an error in the bottom of the first and Grace followed an RBI single by Valente with his seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot to right, to give the Green and White a 4-0 advantage in the second. Finkelstein retired seven consecutive hitters through the middle innings and Babson broke the game open with a four-run sixth.

Drazka brought home senior Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) with an RBI single to center, Moses ripped a base hit through the right side to bring home two more runs, and Grace raced home from third on a throwing error to extend the margin to 8-0. Sophomore Colin Chou (Warren, N.J.) made it 9-0 with a sacrifice fly in the seventh and the Beavers finished off the victory with an RBI double by Grace and an RBI single by Moses with one out in the eighth.

Game 2: Emerson 7, Babson 6
Teator was 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, D'Avanzo singled and drove in two runs, and senior Owen Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.) had an RBI triple to pace the Beavers. Sophomore Dillon James (Attleboro, Mass.) was tagged with the loss to fall to 2-1 despite striking out four and allowing just one run on three hits over 6.1 innings out of the bullpen.

Braeden O'Connell (Boxford, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with a double, John Churchward (Davis, Calif.) and Ethan Chanthompalit (Lowell, Mass.) both had two hits and Jack McCoy (Torrington, Conn.) drove in a pair of runs for the Lions. Henry Kagan (Pelham, N.Y.) struck out six and gave up just one run on two hits over 5.0 innings out of the bullpen to improve to 1-5 with his first win of the season.

O'Connell's RBI double helped Emerson build a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but Valente singled and later scored on an error, D'Avanzo brought home Teator with an RBI ground out and Stephens smacked a two-out triple that scored Grace to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.

The Lions went back in front in the third though, as Churchward reached on an error and scored and McCoy brought home two more runs with a two-out single to center following another error for a 6-3 advantage. Teator scored on D'Avanzo's two-out infield single in the bottom of the frame, and cut the Babson deficit to 6-5 with a two-out RBI single to right in the fourth before the hosts pulled even on an RBI ground out by Chou in the fifth.

James retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced before Emerson put together a two-out rally in the top of the sixth with back-to-back singles, a walk and a wild pitch that allowed Churchward to score the go-ahead run. Moses was stranded at second after reaching with a two-out single in the eighth and Teator doubled to lead off the ninth and advanced to third with two outs before Kagan ended the game with a strikeout.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Babson travels to Springfield, while Emerson hosts Clark.
