Offense Carries Softball to Doubleheader Sweep at Emerson

BOSTON—Juniors Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) and Lexi Sealey (Pleasant Hill. Calif.) combined for 11 hits and five runs batted in over two games to help visiting Babson College sweep Emerson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field.

The Beavers rallied from an early four-run deficit to outlast the Lions 11-10 in nine innings in the opener before completing the sweep with a 9-5 victory in game two.

Babson, which won three of its four games over the weekend, improves to 12-14 overall and 4-4 in conference play. Emerson has lost seven consecutive games and is now 3-15 overall and 1-7 in the NEWMAC.

Game 1: Babson 11, Emerson 10 (9 inn.)
Sealey went 4-for-5 with three RBI, sophomore Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and both Raymond and sophomore Samantha Skivo (Conshohocken, Pa.) finished with three hits apiece to lead the Beavers. Junior Devin McCall (Virginia Beach, Va.) singled twice and drove in two runs, sophomore Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) had three RBI and first-year Anna Topel (Oak Park, Ill.) struck out six and allowed just two earned runs over 9.0 innings to improve to 4-4 with the win.

The Green and White left the bases loaded in the top of the first and Emerson took advantage of three errors in the bottom of the frame to build a 4-0 lead. The Beavers cut their deficit to just one in the fourth before going in front for the first time with a four-run sixth that included a two-run single by DiCampello and a two-out RBI knock by McCall to make it 7-6.

Emerson tied the game on a two-out RBI single by sophomore Avi Kuperman (Newton, Mass.) in the bottom of the sixth, but Babson regained a two-run lead in the top of the eighth as DeLong scored on DiCampello's RBI ground out before McCall came through with another two-out single. The Lions pulled even again in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-out double by sophomore Kari Sorenson (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) before Sealey put the Green and White in front for good with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the ninth.

Emerson cut its deficit to 11-10 on a two-out RBI single by first-year Malena Cardinale (Arlington, Va.) in the bottom of the inning, but Topel got rookie Aislinn McCoy (Barrington, R.I.) to fly out to right.

Junior Cal Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) went the distance in the circle for the hosts, striking out 13 and allowing seven earned runs to drop to 3-8 on the year.

Game 2: Babson 9, Emerson 5
Raymond went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and two runs scored, junior Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) homered as part of a two-hit day and first-year Izzy Burgess (Royersford, Pa.) doubled and had three RBI in the win. McCall also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and junior Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) struck out seven and gave up four earned runs over 7.0 innings to improve to 2-7 with the victory in the circle.

Walsh led off the game with her first career home run and the Green and White took the lead for good with a four-run third inning that included an RBI single from McCall and a two-out bases-clearing double to center by Burgess to build a 5-1 advantage. First-year Charly Landow (Wayne, Pa.) brought home Raymond with a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fifth to make it 6-3, Raymond drove in Sealey with an RBI single in the sixth and the Beavers tacked on two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away.

Landow led off the inning with a single and later scored on an RBI ground out by DiCampello, while Walsh raced home on a wild pitch one batter later to give the Green and White its largest lead of the afternoon at 9-4. Junior Riley Caiazza (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) drove in her second run of the game with a single to left in the bottom of the seventh and Kuperman followed with a base hit to center to load the bases while bringing the potential tying run to the plate, but Vlacich got a first-pitch fly out to center and ground out to second to end the game.

Junior Kate Regan (Manchester, Conn.) dropped to 0-7 on the year with the loss in the circle for the Lions after giving up six runs on nine hits over 4.0 innings.

Babson is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts No. 12 Tufts at 4 p.m., while Emerson travels to Coast Guard for a doubleheader next Friday at 4 p.m.
