BABSON PARK, Mass.—Kaitlyn Perruci (Coto De Caza, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI, and Avery Kanouse (Elmhurst, Ill.) tossed six shutout innings to help No. 12 Tufts University defeat Babson College, 9-0, in non-conference softball action on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Babson had its two-game winning streak halted and is now 12-15 on the year, while Tufts has now won four of its last five games to improve to 21-6 overall.
Sophomore
Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) went 1-for-2 with a walk and junior
Devin McCall (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore
Samantha Skivo (Conshohocken, Pa.) both singled in the loss for the Beavers. Junior
Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) dropped to 2-8 on the year with the loss after allowing seven runs over four innings.
Heaven Oliva (Ventura, Calif.) hit a solo home run, Cat Kawabe (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Haley Leimbach (Wantagh, N.Y.) both doubled twice, and Paige Murphy (San Anselmo, Calif.) and Ella McHugh (Downingtown, Pa.) each added a pair of hits for the Jumbos. Kanouse struck out four and walked four while allowing three hits to improve to 8-2 with the victory in the circle.
Vlacich needed just six pitches to record two quick outs in the first before Murphy, Perucci, Leimbach and Kawabe struck for four consecutive doubles to help Tufts build a 3-0 lead. The Green and White was unable to make Kanouse pay for walking the bases loaded in the first and then stranded two more runners in the second.
The Jumbos extended their lead to 4-0 on an RBI single by McHugh in the fourth and then got a solo homer from Olivia and a two-run shot by Perucci in the fifth to make it 7-0. Kanouse retired 10 of the final 11 batters she faced and the visitors tacked on a pair of unearned runs following a pair of errors in the top of the seventh.
Babson returns to conference play when it travels to Wheaton for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday. Tufts hosts Endicott on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
