Baseball Outslugs Rutgers-Newark, 12-7

DAVENPORT, Fla.— Junior Connor Frickey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had a career-high four hits, including a double, and was one of five players to drive in two runs as Babson College outhit Rutgers-Newark, 17-14, and defeated the Scarlet Raiders, 12-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Northeast Regional Park.
With the victory, Babson snapped its three-game losing streak and improved to 3-6 on the season. Rutgers-Newark dropped its second straight game to fall to 5-8 overall.

First-year Robert Christensen (Scotch Plains, N.J.) produced three hits and an RBI, including a double and a triple, and scored twice, and sophomore Dylan Drazka (Rye Brook, N.Y.) finished with three hits and two RBI for the Beavers. Graduate student Ryan Grace (Concord, Mass.), senior Owen Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.), and junior Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) all had two hits and two RBI and Stephens scored a team-high three runs in the victory.

Junior Malik Little (Bergenfield, N.J.) had a triple among his four hits and drove in three runs, and senior Michael Weinbel (Middletown, N.J.) cracked three hits, including a double and a home run, two runs scored and two RBI for the Scarlet Raiders. Junior Joseph Bernardo (Wayne, N.J.) collected three hits and drove in a run and first-year Jonathan Jerez (Elmwood Park, N.J.) had two hits and scored twice in the setback.

Rutgers-Newark scored twice in the bottom of the first inning when Jerez singled with one out and Weinbel doubled before Jerez scored on a ground out and Weinbel came home on Little's triple to center. Those were the only two runs scored in the first four innings.

Babson tied the score with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Stephens led off with a single to center and came around to score on Christensen's triple to right, and Drazka brought Christensen home with a sacrifice fly to left. The Scarlet Raiders regained the lead briefly in the sixth inning on an RBI double by junior RJ Kernan (Middletown, N.J.).

The Beavers erupted for five runs with two outs in the top of the seventh to open up a 7-3 lead. Grace delivered a bases-loaded two-run single to right, another run came home on a wild pitch, and Frickey capped the rally with a two-run double to left. The Green and White tacked on another run in the eighth when Christensen doubled to center and Drazka brought him home with a single to left.

Rutgers-Newark got two runs back in the last of the eighth on Weinbel's two-run home run to left, but Babson put up a four-spot in the top of the ninth. Grace doubled and Frickey hit an infield single to put two runners on base before Liss ripped a two-run triple to center field and Stephens legged out a two-run inside-the-park home run to center. The Scarlet Raiders rounded out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the ninth when Little produced a bases-load two-run single to left.

Sophomore Chase Burrows (Cream Ridge, N.J.) improve to 2-0 with a seven-inning effort on the mound for the Beavers, allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out three. Classmate Graydon Vyse (Glastonbury, Conn.) earned his first save after allowing two runs in two innings and fanning two. Rutgers-Newark used a bullpen-game with 10 pitchers, including eight guys pitching one inning each, and first-year Ethan Ortiz (Hoboken, N.J.) taking the loss after not getting out of the seventh inning.

Babson wraps up its Florida trip against Franklin & Marshall on Thursday at 9 a.m. at Northeast Regional Park. Rutgers-Newark concludes its time in Florida against Lesley on Thursday at 9 a.m. in Winter Haven.

GAME NOTES
• Babson is 1-1 all-time against the Scarlet Raiders in a series that dates back to 1994. 
• The Green and White produced a season-high 12 runs on a season-high 17 hits, the highest score since a 17-10 win over Wheaton back on April 29 of last season.
• Grace has hit safely in all nine games this season and leads the team with 15 hits, 10 runs, three doubles, three home runs, 15 RBI, and a .429 batting average.
