Softball Records Third Straight Split with Win over Plymouth State and Loss to Salem State

BARTOW, Fla.— Junior Lexi Sealey (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) had two hits, including an RBI triple, and first-year pitcher Anna Ziccardi (Metuchen, N.J.) allowed just two earned runs while striking out eight as the Babson College softball team earned a split of its two games on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-3 victory over Plymouth State University at the Bartow Sports Complex.

Babson, which has finished with splits on its first three days of games in Florida, is now 3-3 on the season after falling to Salem State University in Tuesday's second game 3-0.

Game 1 – Babson 5, Plymouth State 3

Sophomore Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.) had two hits and scored a run, classmate Samantha Skivo (Conshohocken, Pa.) had a hit with two RBI, and fellow sophomore Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) drove in a run for the Beavers. Ziccardi allowed just seven hits in seven innings with three walks and eight Ks to record her first career victory.

Plymouth State jumped on top in the second inning when seniors Kiera Larson (Glenwood Springs, Colo.) and Ariana Cray (Merrimack, N.H.) reached on singles and classmate Kenzie Bessette (Cranston, R.I.) cracked a two-run double to center field. The Beavers got one back in the third when DeLong reached on a leadoff bunt single and came around to score on Sealy's triple to right center.

The teams traded runs in the fifth inning. Junior Nicole Petrillo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led off with an infield single for Babson, advanced to third on a wild pitch and an infield ground out and scored on a double steal, and Bessette led off with a single for Plymouth and came around to score on an outfielder's error.

The Beavers took the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth inning when Skivo delivered a two-run single down the right field line. The Green and White added an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by DiCampello.

Ziccardi sealed the win by retiring the side in the sixth on three infield ground outs, and worked around a pair of walks with two strikeouts in a scoreless seventh inning.

Game 2 – Salem State 3, Babson 0

Junior Alanis Toledano (Boston, Mass.) scattered five hits and two walks for her second career shutout for the Vikings. Classmates Samantha Gaone-Sullivan (Billerica, Mass.) and Abigail LaClair (Wilmington, Mass.) each had two hits and an RBI, and Toledano and sophomore Alaina Giuliano (Malden, Mass.) added two hits each for the winners.

DiCampello went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Beavers and Sealy, DeLong and sophomore Kay Laliberty (Lowell, Mass.) had one hit each.

LaClair gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first inning. Toledano doubled and scored on a single by first-year Giana Johanson (Rutland, Mass.) in the fifth inning, and Gaona- Sullivan delivered an RBI double in the sixth.

The Beavers left two runners on base in the first, fifth and seventh innings and eight all together in the loss.

Babson will be back on the diamond on Wednesday morning, taking on Ramapo at 10 a.m. and the University of New England at 12:30 p.m.

GAME NOTES
• Babson is now 6-1 all-time against Plymouth State in a series that dates back to 2000, and is 0-1 against Salem State in what was the first career meeting against the Vikings.
• Senior Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y., who saw her 18-game hitting streak end on Sunday, had her 20-game on-base streak dating back to last year ended by Salem State in Tuesday's second game. 
• Babson was shut out for the second time this spring after being blanked only once all of last season.
